About

My name is Lina Bose. I have completed my PhD from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur under the supervision of Dr. Jenia Mukherjee. My research topic, titled ‘Mainstreaming Margins: Mapping Challenges and Potentials of Chandannagar from Heritage Conservation Perspectives', was a part of the collaborative action research project between the University of Liverpool UK & Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at IIT Kharagpur. The research topic is extremely timely and relevant in terms of contributing to global historical heritage debates and discourse and radical pathways to impact through the co-involvement of multiple stakeholders. Trained in environmental history and heritage studies and anchored in the discipline of history, my research has a sharp interdisciplinary edge addressing both academic and policy outputs. The study is based on the interaction of history, heritage, and policy. I had already published long articles and short engaging pieces in prestigious journals such as the Journal of Heritage Management, Economic and Political Weekly, Down to Earth, the Journal of the Indian Anthropological Society, and the Journal of Community Archaeology and Heritage. I have contributed book chapters in reputed book series of Taylor & Francis, Springer, Routledge, etc.

I received my bachelor's degree in history from Calcutta University and my master's degree in modern history from Jadavpur University, where I ranked fifth. My research interests span history, heritage, development studies, urban heritage, and critical heritage studies. I am well versed in research methodologies, especially archival research and its significant application in historical ethnography. I worked as a research assistant on an ICSSR-funded project titled "Studies on the link between material existence and religio-cultural practises of marginalised people living in Bay of Bengal coastal areas since ancient times." West Bengal State University hosted the project in 2014–2015. Working with professionals in the field of action research projects, I have extensive expertise in coordinating, aligning, and co-producing action research results. My academic and voluntary experiences have fostered my personal motivation and enabled me to develop as an independent individual. At a college and a school, I worked as a part-time guest lecturer and a full-time teacher assistant. At IIT Kharagpur, I worked as a teaching assistant and managed the course and semester load.

I am one of the recipients of the Charles Wallace India Trust Grant, hosted by the British Council, India. The fellowship gave me the opportunity to consult rare archival records and manuscripts available at the India Office Records, British Library, London, and National Archives, Kew Gardens, UK. I am invited as one of the ten researchers in SMUS (Spatial Method for Urban Sustainability), TU Berlin, and GIZ (the German Agency for International Cooperation) networking project in February 2023.

My research is interdisciplinary and I would be interested in potential collaborations across different disciplines, which engage in historical, heritage and environmental issues.
