About
Sean is the Director of Polling and Analytics at the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE). He has extensive experience in survey design and methodology. He is also a member of the Best Practices in Science Movement working to promote scientific integrity practices in the social sciences.
A native of New Jersey, Sean obtained his Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey – New Brunswick in 2013. His postdoctoral work was done also done at Rutgers in affiliation with the Center for Advanced Studies in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University. In 2016, Sean became Heterodox Academy’s first Director of Research where he developed the Campus Expression Survey. In 2020, he joined FIRE as a Senior Research Fellow.
For almost two decades, Sean's research has focused on understanding how moral convictions can result in motivated reasoning can lead to political intolerance and impact how research is conducted and findings are interpreted in the social sciences.
More recently, he has become interested in understanding the psychological factors that motivate support for censorship and self-censorship.
