Dr. Balaraman Madhan, born on September 22, 1976, is a Chief Scientist at the CSIR-Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) and Professor at Anna University and AcSIR. His remarkable journey at CSIR-CLRI began in 2002 after completing his Ph.D. from the Faculty of Technology, Anna University. Dr. Madhan's early recognition came with the BOYSCAST fellowship in 2007, facilitating his postdoctoral research at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Rutgers, New Jersey, USA.
An eminent figure in the field of biomaterials and tissue engineering, Dr. Madhan's research primarily focuses on the stability and stabilization of collagen, aiming at developing affordable innovations for clinical management of chronic wounds and introducing sustainable eco-technologies in the leather sector. His pioneering work on Sustainable Tanning Technologies has been instrumental in advancing eco-friendly leather manufacturing processes.
Dr. Madhan's scholarly contributions are vast, comprising more than 140 peer-reviewed publications in international journals, 30 patents (including 16 global), and 6 technologies, five of which have been licensed for commercial use. Notably, his technology on Collagen Composite Scaffold has revolutionized the treatment of a wide range of chronic wounds, significantly impacting lives by providing effective and affordable collagen biomaterials solutions, thereby reducing both amputations and social wounds.
His dedication to research and innovation has been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the CSIR Young Scientist Award (2009), the Institution of Engineers (IEI) and Indian National Academy of Engineers (INAE) Young Engineer awards (2011), the CSIR Diamond Jubilee Award (2016), the FICCI R&D Award, the CSIR Technology Award for Innovation, the NRDC National Meritorious Invention Award (2017), and the INAE Young Innovator Award (2021). These accolades celebrate his significant contributions to the understanding of collagen-based biomaterials and tanning processes, as well as his impact on biomedical applications.
Currently, Dr. Madhan leads a pivotal project on Collagen Biomaterials, targeting unmet clinical requirements.
