About
Dr Amit Kumar, Senior Scientist, Animal Genetics Division of ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute has contributed significantly towards teaching and research in genome wide structural and functional genomics and its application in the quantitative genetics. He has a total of 15 years of research/teaching experience, wherein he has guided 12 students (6 MVSc & 6 PhD) as Chairman & 50 students as member of advisory committee mainly in the area vaccine genetics and reported genetic basis of variation in humoral immune response after vaccination. He reported significantly higher poly unsaturated fatty acids in milk of indigenous cattle over crossbred cattle and buffaloes. He has been instrumental in establishing two new Experiential Learning Units (ELUs) in the Institute for improving entrepreneurship skill of BVSc students & developed new course of Laboratory animal production apart from teaching a total of 12 courses which mainly include Statistical genetics, Lineal models, Bioinformatics, Research techniques in Animal Breeding, Small Laboratory Animals to PG and PhD students and Animal Genetics and Breeding & Computer application to BVSc & AH students. With his significant contribution a Big data analysis laboratory for computational genomics work at Animal Genetics division on the Indian Veterinary Research Institute has been established. Further, he has been providing the Bioinformatics analytical support to PG/PhD students of institute as scientist Incharge of the Bioinformatics centre of institute and also provided his service for production and supply of quality laboratory animals for executing research work of PG students and faculty of Institute and other academic and research institutions as Incharge of the section during 2008 to 2021. Dr Amit Kumar has been trained at IOWA State University, USA and ETH, Zurich, Switzerland in area of genomic data analysis in Animal Sciences & carries very sharp scientific temperament in conceiving novel ideas for implementation and execution of scientific projects. He has executed the Genome Wide Association Study (GWAS) in novel economic traits of cattle (milk minerals, milk fatty acids) and pigs (herd immunity traits) using Big data analysis. He executed 06 research projects (03 External funded & 03 Institute funded) and at present as principal Investigator of world bank funded project of NAHEP, wherein a total of 36 PG/PhD students and 15 faculties have been deputed for overseas training in different reputed university/institutions of world. Dr Amit Kumar has published a total of 140 research papers in reputed peer reviewed international and national journals and having16 h-index (i10-32) at google scholar. Further, he has published one book and 08 technical bulletin/manual. He published 90 scientific reports in conferences and seminars and delivered 10 invited talks along with 45 lectures in different training programmes. In capacity of course director/coordinator, he organised 03 winters schools and 07 short term trainings in area of animal genetics and bioinformatics. He has been recipient of the prestigious Associateship of National Academy of Agricultural Sciences in 2017 and 05 best paper/poster awards.
