Dr. Gaurav Saxena is an Indian environmental microbiologist, academician, researcher, and author specializing in bioremediation, wastewater treatment, microbial ecology, metagenomics, and environmental sustainability. He is currently an Assistant Professor in the Institute of Sciences (IOSc) at SAGE University, Indore, Madhya Pradesh, India, and holds an MSc and PhD in Environmental Microbiology from Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India. His research focuses on harnessing the potential of microorganisms to develop innovative, sustainable, and practical solutions to pressing environmental challenges. He has authored, co-authored, and edited several scientific papers, book chapters, reviews, book reviews, popular science articles, conference papers and proceedings, books, special issues, policy documents, and editorials. His publications have garnered over 4,600 citations with an h-index of 30. Dr. Saxena has made significant contributions in the national and international arena and has received several awards and honors for scientific research from several scientific organizations, including, “STE Water Award-2023”, dual “Young Scientist Awards-2021, 2020”, “Young Achiever Award-2019”, and the “Young Environmentalist Award-2018”. Earlier, Dr. Saxena held several academic and administrative positions at various institutions. He served as State President and Coordinator of the Microbiologists Society (MBSI), Himachal Chapter, Himachal Pradesh, and held key responsibilities at Mandsaur University, Madhya Pradesh, including Placement Coordinator, Innovation Activity Coordinator (IIC), Internship Coordinator, and Feedback Coordinator. At Shoolini University, Himachal Pradesh, he served as In-Charge of the Microbiology Research Laboratory (MRL), Program Coordinator for MSc/BSc Microbiology, and as a member of the Research Advisory Committee (RAC) and Board of Studies (BoS) at the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Biotechnology.
He has edited several scholarly books, including “Bioremediation of Industrial Pollutants” (Write and Print Publication, New Delhi, India); “Bioremediation of Industrial Waste for Environmental Safety: Industrial Waste and Its Management” (Vol. I) (Springer Nature, Singapore); “Bioremediation of Industrial Waste for Environmental Safety: Biological Agents and Industrial Waste Management” (Vol. II) (Springer Nature, Singapore); Bioremediation for Environmental Sustainability: Toxicity, Mechanisms of Contaminants Degradation, Detoxification and Challenges” (Elsevier, USA), and “Bioremediation of Environmental sustainability: Approaches to Tackle Pollution for Cleaner and Greener Society” (Elsevier, The Netherlands). He is also the author of Microbe-Assisted Phytoremediation of Environmental Pollutants: Recent Advances and Challenges (CRC Press, T&F, USA). Additionally, alongside his academic and research pursuits, he provides environmental consultancy services to various industries. He also holds several distinguished editorial positions, serving as Academic Editor for PLOS Water (USA); Guest Associate Editor and Review Editor for Frontiers in Microbiology (Switzerland); Associate Editor and Review Editor for Frontiers in Environmental Science (Switzerland); and Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Applied Biology and Biotechnology (JABB), OSP, India.
Dr. Saxena has served as a reviewer for reputed journals in his fields, supervised 19+ master’s and 05 PhD theses, and acted as an external examiner for setting question-papers and viva voce of PhD/MSc students for several universities. He has organized several national and international conferences, workshops, training programmes, and other academic and scientific activities; designed new course/curricula; delivered several invited talks; served as an external expert member of BOS; presented research at scientific forums; served as judge for scientific presentations; supervised various industrial consulting projects; and served on various university-level committees. He currently serves as the “Joint Secretary” of the Executive Council of the National Environmental Science Academy (NESA), New Delhi, India. As a member, Dr. Saxena is affiliated with multiple scientific societies, notably the Association of Microbiologists of India (AMI); American Society of Microbiology (ASM) USA; Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA); Microbiology Society (MicroSoc) London; British Ecological Society (BES), London; American Chemical Society (ACS), USA; and International Society for Development and Sustainability (ISDS), Japan.
