About

Prof. Amit Kumar has been involved in interdisciplinary research on ecological risk across urban and forested landscapes by translating machine learning and geo-technologies for sustainable ecosystems and societies. His research aims to augment the ecological resilience of urban and forest ecosystems using multi-sensor approaches. Also, he seeks to develop disaster risk reduction strategies utilizing nature-based solutions to address geoenvironmental hazards in various vulnerable ecosystems, including the Himalayas.
Presently, he is a Professor of Geography in Institute of Science, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), India. Previously, he was affiliated with Purdue University, USA (Fulbright Fellow), Sikkim University (Professor) and Central University of Jharkhand (Assistant Professor), India.
Over the last few years, Dr. Kumar has led pioneering research through several state-of-the-art R&D projects funded by DBT, ISRO, and Columbia Water Centre, focusing on baseline database generation for bioresources, spatio-temporal biomass estimation, and geoenvironmental hazards investigations. His involvement in the Long-term Ecological Observatories (LTEO) Program with IISc., Bangalore, is one of the milestones to understanding the effects of climate change on forest dynamics and soil processes in the Indian scenario. Dr. Kumar has published various internationally recognized works in leading journals of scientific merits, including Nature Ecology & Evolution, PNAS, Science of the Total Environment, and Cities, with over 80+ journal articles with a very high total impact factor (~260), 02 edited book volume, and over 50 book chapters. He is the recipient of several international and national awards, including the P.R. Pisharoty Memorial Award (2025), Fulbright-Nehru Academic and Professional Excellence Fellow (2023-2024), Postdoctoral Travel Award (Purdue University), Prof. B. Hemamalini Eminent Geographer's Award 2024 (National Association of Geographers, India), Fellow (2022, SSCE) and Young Scientist Award (2020, SSCE), etc.
