About
I am a researcher born in Ethiopia. I completed my B.Sc. in Applied Biology from Hawassa University in 2007 and my Master's degree in Biotechnology from Arba Minch University, Ethiopia, in 2012. I gained good research experience while working on my master's thesis at the National Agricultural Biotechnology Research Centre in Holeta, Ethiopia. In May 2022, I completed my PhD in Biotechnology at the Department of Bio- and Nano-Technology of Guru Jambheshwar University of Science and Technology under the supervision of Professor Vinod Chhokar with a dissertation on "Deciphering Transcriptional and Post-transcriptional Regulatory Mechanisms of Capsicum annuum L.-Phytophthora capsici L.photosystem"
From 2008 to 2024, I worked as an assistant and lecturer at Mizan Tepi University and as a lecturer and assistant professor at Wolkite University in Ethiopia. I have taught several biotechnology courses and worked as a PI researcher. I have more than ten years of teaching and research experience. I have supervised four Master's students and ten Bachelor's students in their final theses.
My research interests mainly focus on deciphering the molecular interaction between plants and pathogens, analysing transcriptomic and post-transcriptomic sequencing to identify differentially expressed genes and small RNAs in plant-pathogen interaction, the development of host-induced gene silencing, the development of artificial microRNAs to combat plant viruses, and spray-induced gene silencing in crops under biotic and abiotic stress. I have gained good experience in transcriptome and post-transcriptome sequence analysis of crop plants and RNAi gene silencing techniques. I have presented my research work at several international and national conferences. I have published nineteen papers in peer-reviewed journals. I am a member of the Association of Microbiologists of India and the Ethiopian Biological Society.
I have been awarded two postdoctoral fellowships, namely the BiotechNet and the Arturo Falaschi Postdoctoral Fellowship.I am currently working as a post-doctoral researcher on “Development of artificial microRNA in rice to combat Southern Rice Black Streak Dwarf Virus" at the Plant RNAi Biology Lab, ICGEB campus, in New Delhi, India.
