Dr. Gopal Kumar is an exercise physiologist, sports scientist, teacher, and researcher working at the intersection of exercise physiology, strength and conditioning, physical fitness, athletic performance, and applied sports science. He is currently serving as an Assistant Professor of Exercise Physiology at the Sports University of Haryana, Rai, Sonipat, India. His academic and research training has been rooted in physical education and exercise physiology, with a particular interest in understanding how structured exercise, training variables, physiological responses, and sport-specific interventions influence human performance. Through his research, teaching, academic service, and engagement with athletes, he seeks to connect scientific evidence with practical applications in sport and physical activity.

Dr. Kumar completed his Bachelor of Physical Education (B.P.Ed.) in 2017 and Master of Physical Education (M.P.Ed.) with specialization in Exercise Physiology in 2019 from the Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE), Gwalior, India. He subsequently completed his PhD in Physical Education with specialization in Exercise Physiology in 2024. His academic progression reflects a sustained focus on exercise science and the physiological foundations of physical performance. During his academic career, he qualified the UGC-NET JRF examination in his first attempt in November 2017 and again secured JRF in June 2019 with a 99.97 percentile, demonstrating a strong foundation in academic and research aptitude.

His research profile has developed around applied questions in exercise physiology and sports performance. His work has examined training interventions, exercise frequency, strength and power development, aerobic and anaerobic performance, post-activation performance enhancement, physical fitness, sport-specific performance, and physiological characteristics of athletes. His research has included studies involving soccer, field hockey, basketball, beach volleyball, and other athletic populations. A recurring feature of his work is the evaluation of training methods that can be translated into practical programmes for athletes and coaches.

One of the most prominent strands of Dr. Kumar’s research concerns complex and complex-contrast training. Complex training combines strength-oriented exercises with explosive or plyometric activities, while complex-contrast approaches are designed to manipulate the force-velocity characteristics of muscular performance through strategically paired exercises. His research has examined how these approaches affect physical fitness and athletic performance and how programme variables such as training frequency may influence outcomes. In one study, he investigated the effects of complex training on aerobic and anaerobic power in amateur athletes from soccer and hockey. The study used a six-week intervention and assessed anaerobic power through the Running-based Anaerobic Sprint Test and aerobic power through the 12-minute Cooper run/walk test. The findings indicated improvements in anaerobic power following complex training, supporting the potential value of integrating such training into regular sport preparation.

His research has also explored the effects of exercise frequency in complex-contrast training. This line of work is important because the effectiveness of a training intervention is not determined only by the type of exercise but also by how often it is performed. By investigating different frequencies and their effects on measures of physical fitness, his work contributes to the practical question of how strength and power training can be organized efficiently for active adults and athletes. His studies have examined outcomes such as sprint performance, jumping ability, strength, agility, and other components of athletic fitness.

Another important area of his research is the application of complex-contrast training to sport-specific populations. His studies have examined male field hockey athletes and university-level male soccer players, including pre-season training contexts. These investigations have considered whether structured combinations of resistance and plyometric exercises can enhance physical qualities that are directly relevant to sport performance. Such research is particularly valuable in high-performance sport because coaches must balance training effectiveness with the demands of technical and tactical preparation, competition schedules, recovery, and athlete readiness. His work with male field hockey athletes, for example, examined a six-week complex-contrast training intervention using measures including sprinting, medicine-ball throwing, jumping, agility, and isokinetic strength.

Dr. Kumar has also contributed to research on post-activation performance enhancement (PAPE), a phenomenon in which a previous muscular activity can acutely influence subsequent performance. His work has examined combinations of ballistic exercise
