About
Dr. Subrata Chakraborty is a Professor (HAG) and former Head of Civil Engineering at the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur. He is a fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering, West Bengal Academy of Science and Technology, Council of Vibration Specialists and the Institution of Engineers (India). Prof. Chakraborty did his Bachelor in Civil Engineering from Bengal Engineering College in 1991, Shibpur, M. Tech. and PhD from IIT Kharagpur in 1993, and 1997. He was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Cambridge, UK and University of Arizona, USA and the Technical University of Aachen, Germany. In general, Prof. Chakraborty’s research interests are in the field of uncertainty quantification, structural health monitoring, structures under extreme events, vibration control, fibre reinforced composites etc.
As an independent researcher, he has completed a number of research projects funded by various agencies (e.g. the DST, UGC, CSIR etc.). He is also active in international collaborative research e.g. CP-STIO Programme of DST on “Development of a Novel Nondestructive Robust Structural Health Assessment Technique with Minimum Noise Contaminated Information” with US collaborator Prof. Achintya Haldar of Univeristy of Arizona and Indo-Italian Cultural Exchange Programme of UGC on seismic vulnerability assessment, multi-objective stochastic design, and reliability based optimization with Prof. Giuseppe Carlo Marano of Politecnico di Bari, Italy. He is also selected in the Duo-India Fellowship programme for a further collaborative visit to Politecnico di Torino. He has completed supervision of fourteen doctoral (four more ongoing) and eighty master theses besides guiding several projects at undergraduate level. Prof. Chakraborty published more than 130 technical articles in international peer reviewed journals, also authored books and book chapters. He regularly reviewed research articles for various journals of ASCE, John Wiley, Elsevier Science, Springer, SAGE, Taylor and Francis, Techno Press etc. Prof. Chakraborty was the Managing Editor of International Journal of Engineering under Uncertainty: Hazards, Assessment, and Mitigation and was an associate editor of the Journal of Science and Technology, associate editor of J of Institution of Engineers Series A, Springer. He is one of the section editors of INAE Letters and an editorial member of International J. of Control Engg. and Technology (IJCET), J. of Structural Engg. and Management. He has been nominated as the alternate member of design code of steel structures, IS 800, 2007 CED:7.
Besides being an outstanding researcher and a devoted teacher, he is also active in important industrial consultancy e.g. quality control assurance services of thermal power plant, checking the structural integrity of one of the tallest residential buildings of Kolkata, RCC Jetty, underground reservoir, pumping station, hydroelectric power station, railway bridges, ropeways, health monitoring of Vidysagar Setu connecting Kolkata and Howrah, Water Transmission Project from Hooghly River to New Town, Rajarhat, Kolkata etc.
While his inspiring teaching coupled with innate urge for intensive research has already established him as a distinguished academician at the national level, several awards and laurels have come his way. The Humboldt Fellowship for Experienced Researchers, the V. H. Joshi Award for Significant Contributions in Structural Dynamics, the INAE Young Engineer Award, the BOYSCAST Fellowship award, and the Young Faculty Research Award deserve special mention.
