About

Dr. Suranjana Patowary is an Assistant Professor at Girijananda Chowdhury University (GCU), Assam, India. Her research interests lie at the interface of materials chemistry, electrocatalysis, nanomaterials, electrochemistry, and sustainable energy conversion.

She completed her doctoral research under the supervision of Prof. Pankaj Bharali, focusing on the development of advanced hybrid electrocatalytic materials for oxygen electrode reactions. Her research has particularly explored transition-metal-based nanomaterials, oxide–oxide and oxide–hydroxide interfaces, oxygen vacancies, supported nanoparticles, and structure–activity relationships in electrocatalysis, with an emphasis on developing efficient and durable alternatives to precious-metal-based catalysts.

Dr. Patowary was awarded a Commonwealth Split-site Scholarship/Award for advanced research at the University of Southampton, UK, where she worked under the guidance of Emeritus Professor Andrea E. Russell. Her research experience at Southampton provided exposure to advanced electrochemical techniques and state-of-the-art facilities for studying electrocatalytic materials and electrochemical energy conversion.

As part of her research, she has also worked at the Diamond Light Source, UK, using in situ synchrotron beamline facilities to investigate the structural and chemical behaviour of electrocatalytic materials under operating conditions. This experience has contributed to her interest in understanding catalyst structure, surface chemistry, defects, interfaces, and their relationship with electrochemical performance.

Her broader research experience encompasses oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions (ORR/OER), bifunctional electrocatalysts, nanostructured transition-metal oxides, heterogeneous catalysis, fuel-cell-related materials, and catalytic approaches for energy and environmental applications. She has also contributed to research exploring the catalytic valorisation of waste materials, including plastics, towards useful chemical products. Her academic interests encompass chemistry education, materials chemistry, and interdisciplinary applications of chemistry.

At GCU, she is actively involved in teaching, curriculum development, student mentoring, and academic activities at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She contributes to academic and institutional initiatives aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, including student development, Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS), and experiential learning activities. She believes in "Give more than you take"!
