About

Research Profile:
Autophagy and Breast cancer ( Cellular and Molecular Biochemistry)
To understand the molecular basis and cell biological aspects of autophagy upon nutrient deprivation in mammalian cells. This work is based on our recent discovery that defective nucleocytoplasmic trafficking due to dysfunctional karyopherins modulates autophagy. To examine and explore means to manipulate autophagy levels in breast cancer cells with the long-term goal to optimize cancer therapy through autophagy modulation. Protein localization due to defective nucleocytoplasmic trafficking occurs in a variety of different cancer cells. We are focusing on our recent discovery that defective nucleocytoplasmic trafficking due to dysfunctional karyopherins modulates autophagy in yeast and human normal and cancer cells.

I have all the necessary experience and expertise essential to carry out the proposed molecular and cell biology work described in my research and grant proposal. As a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and University of Louisville and OSU, I carried out cutting edge work in biochemistry, molecular biology, neuroscience and cell biology related to enzymes and genes associated with GPCR signaling. Technical skills achieved by me through these studies and related training will be useful in key research areas of my application.

As a postdoctoral fellow/Senior Research Associate at University of Tennessee Health Science Center, I have also laid the groundwork for several research areas pertaining to lung, heart and brain biology involving genes associated with GPCR signaling. In addition, I have previously participated in NIH-funded research work and interacted with my peers to achieve the long term goals of the projects. With these broad experiences and research expertise, I am certain that I can carry out all the currently proposed aims in our research group.
