About

Purushottam Chakraborty, a Former Senior Professor of Physics, Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Kolkata, India and a Former Adjunct Professor of Physics, University of Pretoria, South Africa is considered one of the leading experts in Ion-beam Analysis of Materials and Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS).

Prof Chakraborty was awarded the “Most Eminent Mass Spectrometrist of India” by the Indian Society for Mass Spectrometry and conferred “Gold Medal” by the Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission, Government of India for his outstanding contributions to SIMS. He was awarded by University of Calcutta the "Premchand Roychand Scholarship" and "Mouat Medal", the most prestigious awards of Calcutta University. He was awarded the "Rashbehari Ghose Travelling Fellowship" by the Vice Chancellor, Calcutta University for joining the first postdoctoral position in the Netherlands. Prof Chakraborty has received the "Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray Memorial Award" from the Indian Photobiology Society on August 02, 2024.

His research areas include Atomic Collisions in Solids, Ion-Beam Modifications and Analysis of Materials, Secondary Ion and Neutral Mass Spectrometry (SIMS/SNMS), Ion Scattering Spectrometry (ISS), Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis (ESCA), Low-Dimensional Materials and Nanostructures, Optoelectronics, X-UV Optics, Nonlinear Optics, Photonics, Plasmonics, etc.

Prof Chakraborty indigenously designed and fabricated an RF-Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer based SIMS laboratory at Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics for the first time in India for working on "Inelastic Ion-Surface Collisions". Later, he developed a state-of-the-art SIMS/SNMS laboratory at Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics. His works on “Alkali-Metal containing (MCsn)+ Molecular-ions in SIMS” is considered to be innovative for the quantitative composition analysis of low-dimensional structures and nanomaterials without the aid of calibration standards. His works on ‘Layered Synthetic Microstructures (LSMs)’ at the FOM-Institute for Atomic and Molecular Physics, Amsterdam, in collaboration with Philips Research Laboratories, Eindhoven, is recognized as a pioneering contribution to the “Realization of Optical Devices for the Extreme Ultraviolet to Soft X-rays”. His works on “Metal-Glass Nanocomposites” have led to remarkable achievements toward the development of novel photonic materials.

Prof Chakraborty worked at FOM-Institute for Atomic and Molecular Physics, Amsterdam; International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) and Padua University, Italy; Université Laval, Canada; Osaka Electro-Communication University, Japan; University of Pretoria, South Africa; Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, etc.

Prof Chakraborty visited and delivered lectures at Imperial College London; Maria Curie-Skłodowska University and Polish Academy of Sciences in Poland; Vanderbilt University, IBM T J Watson Research Centre, State University of New Jersey - Rutgers, Furman University, Yale University in the USA; Bielefeld University, Friedrich Schiller University, Kaiserslautern University in Germany; The University of Western Australia, Newcastle University in Australia; Osaka Electrocommunication University, Kyoto University, Spring-8, RIKEN, Nagoya Institute of Technology, Ritsumaikan University in Japan; Chinese Academy of Sciences in China; National Taiwan University, National Central University, Academia Sinica in Taiwan; Monash University, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Witwatersrand University, iThemba Labs for Accelerator Sciences, Pretoria University, Nelson Mandela University in South Africa; the University of Malaya in Malaysia; Asian Institute of Technology in Thailand, etc.

Prof Chakraborty has published more than 135 scientific papers including reviews, monographs and book chapters. He edited a number of books - (1) “Ion-Beam Analysis of Surfaces and Interfaces of Condensed Matter Systems” (Nova Science, USA); (2) Journal of Physics – Conference Series (IOP Publications, UK); (3) “Photonic Materials" - Encyclopedia of Materials: Electronics, Volume 2 (Elsevier); (4) “Nanoscale Matter and Principles for Sensing and Labelling Applications” (Springer Nature); (5) "Low-Dimensional Materials, Systems and Applications", Volume 1: Principles, Methods and Approaches in Electronics and Photonics; (6) "Low-Dimensional Materials, Systems and Applications", Volume 2: Principles, Methods and Approaches in Biomedical Engineering and Biomedicine (Elsevier). (7) "Nonlinear Phenomena in Nanostructures" (World Scientific), in preparation.

Prof Chakraborty is a Member of the Editorial Board, International Journal of Modern Physics B and Modern Physics Letters B (World Scientific) and Editor, Special Issue "2D Materials: Perspectives" (World Scientific).

Prof Chakraborty is a Fellow of the Indian Chemical Society and West Bengal Academy of Science & Technology.
