About

I am Dr. Nilanjana Roy chowdhury, presently working as a research associate in Jadavpur University, Kolkata India and obtained my PhD degree from this university (School of Environmental Studies) in 2021, under the supervision of Dr. Tarit Roychowdhury (Associate Professor, Jadavpur University).
My PhD research work mainly deals with groundwater arsenic contamination and its subsequent movement in the food chain. I have focused on the arsenic distribution and allocation pattern, flow estimation from soil-paddy system to the human gut, examining the acute and chronic toxic impact on mammals and investigating possible mitigation options through adsorption and co-precipitation. In this regard I have published 5 first author papers in Chemosphere, Science of the Total Environment, Journal of Hazardous Material, and Groundwater for Sustainable Development. I also have 5 book chapters to my name as the first author from various leading scientific publication houses (Springer, Taylor and Francis, Wiley & Sons, Geological Society of India). A larger chunk of my work is in the pipeline as another first author manuscript as well as a first author book chapter is already in communication (Current Opinion in Environmental Science & Health; Springer).
In the course of my PhD I have mainly worked on 3 projects-
1.Evaluation of arsenic flow dynamics into food chain from contaminated groundwater, plant and soil system during harvesting, post-harvesting, along with cooking of food materials in a multi dimensional approach.
2.Arsenic modulates acute and chronic health hazards in differently exposed human population and domestic livestock through daily dietary intakes along with their future risk appraisal.
3.Assessment of potential phyto-remedial and co-precipitation strategy for arsenic removal from contaminated drinking water.
Throughout the course of my PhD, I have presented my work on numerous platforms (both online and offline), including short lectures, platform presentations, posters, and invited talks. During my PhD, working on invited reviews, book chapters, and article curation alongside scientific paper writing is a forte that I believe has developed as an acquired skill for me. Added to these, I have also served as a reviewer for peer-reviewed journals like 'Frontiers in environmental science' and 'Environmental chemistry letters' and have therein developed a skill for critical appraisal of scientific reports based on a varied array of works in the field of environmental science, agriculture and analytical chemistry. Apart from my regular bench work, I am a proficient user of MS-Excel for data management and adept in using statistical software like SPSS, Graph Pad Prism for data analysis.
Using an interdisciplinary approach, I have worked on several initiatives that bridge and combine many facets of environmental sciences, analytical chemistry, and agricultural operations. The projects were successfully coordinated in between groups of researchers, scientists and farmers (stakeholders), who worked for a common goal with me mediating the communication and the scientific methodology alongside data curation and processing. I have led small groups and worked under the supervision of professors from several universities and institutions who participated in my scientific endeavours.
