About
Dr. Gauthaman Kalamegam, currently serves as a Guest Adjunct Professor, Center for Transdisciplinary Research, Department of Pharmacology, since December 2021. Dr. Gauthaman is a clinician-scientist with more than 19 years of research experience. His main research interests are in the field of ‘Stem cells and Regenerative Medicine’ and ‘Cancer Biology’. Early and immediate post-doctoral research involved in vitro and in vivo pharmacology of male erectile dysfunction and penile tissue engineering. Later research involved the development of (i) a pharmaceutical screening platform using human Embryonic Stem Cells (hESCs) to identify potential drug candidates; (ii) increasing the hESC cell numbers in vitro using biodegradable nanoscaffolds; and (iii) overcoming the problem of tumorigenesis associated with hESCs. Recent research involves the extra-embryonic, human Wharton's jelly stem cells (hWJSCs) with a focus on (i) in vitro differentiation into clinically useful tissues viz. osteocytes, chondrocytes, neurons; (ii) clinical translation towards the management of osteoarthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, and (iii) evaluation of their anti-tumorigenic properties against various cancer cell lines both in vitro and in vivo
