Akash Gautam

About

Dr. Akash Gautam is working as an Assistant Professor at the Centre for Neural and Cognitive Science, School of Medical Sciences, University of Hyderabad. He is currently teaching multi-disciplinary courses like Introduction to Cognitive Science, Molecular Neuroscience, and Statistics & Research Methodology to his M.Sc. and Ph.D. students. Along with teaching, Dr. Gautam is investigating the molecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases as well as applications of nanomaterials, biosensors, and nano drugs in these diseases. His previous contributions to the field include exploration of the role of synaptic plasticity genes like activity-regulated cytoskeleton-associated protein (Arc), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), etc., during neurodegenerative disease associated amnesia and its restoration with the herbal extract.

Dr. Gautam is a trained teacher with a BSc BEd degree in Biological Sciences from Regional Institute of Education, NCERT, Ajmer. He finished his postgraduate degree in Zoology from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, specializing in Biochemistry and Molecular biology. Afterward, he continued there to earn his Doctor of Philosophy degree under the mentorship of Prof. MK Thakur. After his doctoral degree, Gautam joined the present position at the University of Hyderabad in 2013. He currently has seven research publications, twenty encyclopedia entries, and one book chapter, all in reputed national and international publications of the neurobiology field. Other than several travel awards from IBRO, ISN, and DST, he received a research award (of USD 5000) from the ISN Committee for Aid and Education in Neurochemistry (CAEN) in 2016. He has attended 25 workshops/training programs and presented his work in 30 conferences/seminars at both national and international levels. He is also an active member of prominent neuroscience societies like SfN, ISN, APSN, SNCI, etc.
