Dr.r Chetan Ramesh Kalal, MD, DM (Hepatology), isa hepatologistt andliver transplant physiciann at Gleneagles Hospital, Mumbai. He holds the distinction of being the first DM hepatologist from Maharashtra.
Dr Kalal completed his MBBS at ACPM Medical College, Dhule graduating as Best Student of his batch — followed by MD in General Medicine at Seth GS Medical College & KEM Hospital, Mumbai. He then trained at the Institute of Liver & Biliary Sciences (ILBS), New Delhi, earning his DM in Hepatology & Transplant Medicine in 2016 under the mentorship of Prof. Shiv Kumar Sarin.
His clinical practice spans the full spectrum of hepatology: liver transplantation (including ABO-incompatible, swap, and dual-lobe transplants; >1000 complex cases), therapeutic endoscopy (EVL, band ligation, glue injection, Danis/Ella stent, ERCP), HVPG measurement, liver biopsy, and TJLB. He serves as a visiting consultant at Breach Candy Hospital, Khar Hinduja, Saifee and the Asian Cancer Institute, Mumbai.
His research programme centres on acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF), acute liver failure, nutritional therapy in cirrhosis, viral hepatitis (B and C), drug- and herb-induced liver injury, and metabolic-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). He is an active investigator of the APASL ACLF Research Consortium (AARC), contributing to landmark multi-centre studies on ACLF natural history, organ failure prediction, and management. His principal investigator–led work includes the MAHAL randomised controlled trial (mannitol vs hypertonic saline for raised intracranial pressure in acute liver failure; *Dig Dis* 2021) and a randomised trial on long-term aggressive nutritional therapy in alcohol-related cirrhosis (*Indian J Gastroenterol* 2022). He has 26 PubMed-indexed publications.
Dr Kalal is a member of AASLD, EASL, the Indian Society of Gastroenterology (ISG), and INASL, and serves as Review Editor for Frontiers in Gastroenterology. He received AASLD Young Investigator Travel Awards in 2016 (Boston) and 2017 (Washington DC), and EASL Young Investigator Full Bursaries for top-ranked oral presentations at the International Liver Congress in Barcelona (2016) and Amsterdam (2017).
