About
After graduating from the Veterinary School at the University of Córdoba, Spain (1984–1989), I was awarded a government PhD Fellowship to undertake my doctoral studies at the University of Cádiz, School of Chemistry (1990–1995). In 1996, I moved to the University of Lund, Sweden, for postdoctoral research on vertebrate forebrain development, which I continued at the MRC National Institute for Medical Research (1997–2000) and subsequently at the MRC Centre for Developmental Neurobiology, King’s College London (2000–2003).
In 2003, supported by a Wellcome Trust Research Career Development Fellowship, I joined the Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health at University College London, where I established my independent research group focused on normal brain and pituitary development and related diseases.
My current research programme investigates the role of cellular senescence in cancer, with a particular emphasis on paediatric brain and pituitary tumours, aiming to identify new therapeutic targets for these neoplasms. We have developed genetically engineered mouse models of paediatric tumours and conducted comprehensive omics studies in human and mouse samples, significantly advancing the understanding of the aetiology and pathogenesis of congenital hypopituitarism and paediatric craniopharyngioma. More recently, our work has expanded to include other tumour types, such as paediatric low- and high-grade gliomas and KRAS-driven lung adenocarcinoma.
