About
Purnesh Singh Badavath completed his PhD in the Department of Physics at the National Institute of Technology, Warangal, India, under the supervision of Dr Vijay Kumar. Phd thesis title is "Speckle Learned Structured Light Recognition in Spatial and Temporal Domains." His research focuses on structured light and its applications in optical communication, sensing, and quantum information processing, with a particular emphasis on speckle-based machine learning techniques. He has pioneered methods for recognising structured light beams, including Laguerre–Gaussian and Hermite–Gaussian modes, by analysing spatial (2D and 1D speckle patterns) and temporal (0-D temporal speckle sequences) information using custom-designed convolutional neural networks. His work has advanced robust, alignment-free, and turbulence-resilient communication systems, including non-line-of-sight free-space optical communication and mode recognition in multimode fibres.
Purnesh has published in leading journals such as Journal of Optics, Optics Letters, Applied Optics, and JOSA A, and has contributed popular science articles to Optics & Photonics News. His research has been recognised with awards, including the Best PhD thesis award from the Optical Society of India, the Best Poster Award at the 7th ICOAM Conference and the OSI Best Paper Award. He has presented his work at major international conferences, including CLEO, FiO+LS, Laser Congress, SPIE, JSAP, APS Meetings, and OSI symposia.
With strong expertise in experimental photonics, beam alignment, spatial light modulators, optical alignment, precision data acquisition, and AI-driven data analysis, he aims to bridge machine learning with photonic systems for next-generation optical and quantum technologies.
