About

I am Dr. L. Lakshman Kumar and recently joined the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas, USA.

My Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati, India on October 7th, 2022. My research expertise lies in the fields of Immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, and genomics. During my PhD tenure, I investigated the impact of dietary selenium and its deficiency in animal models to study human diseases. In particular, my major goals focused on “How selenium deficiency exacerbates oxidative stress, inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction and cardiomyocytes apoptosis in a rats’ model”. To achieve these goals, I used a selenium-deficient rats’ model and employed a multidisciplinary approach, including mitochondrial biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, cell-based biochemical assays, and the use of cutting-edge FACS technology. Additionally, I characterized selenium-enriched eggs by using proteomics and protein biochemistry.

Another research line of my work is also dedicated to understanding how the selenium status impacts host-virus interactions significantly. To achieve these goals, we will follow an interdisciplinary approach the combines Se probiotic nutrition, vaccine immunology, and molecular biology and use the advanced technology of Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) followed by state-of-the-art bioinformatic work. Finally, these findings provided evidence that deficient Se supplement resulted in gut barrier dysfunction, intestinal inflammation and histological injury. Furthermore, poor growth performance, laying performance and susceptibility to Newcastle disease virus infection lead to economic loss in the poultry industry. Whereas dietary Se probiotic supplementation chicks showed healthy gut and improved growth performance, enhanced laying performances. On the other side, we identified the key gene causes for Se-deficiency and their differential gene expression between the Se-deficient host and the normal host.

Finally, this research resulted in the three papers published in Scientific Reports (2018 & 2020, 2023). Additionally, ten new extremophiles were identified in salt ponds of Nellore district, India (GenBank Accession No: MH458765, MH458766, MH458768, MH458769, MH458770, MH458771, MH458772, MH458775, MH458776, and MH458778). Through this research, I gained insight into the cutting-edge research occurring in Science. In this context, I was motivated to become a future research scientist as a long-term career goal.
