About
Vladimir Leksa graduated the study of biochemistry in 1995 in the Comenius University. He accomplished his graduate study with distinction in 2002 at the Vienna University. His work was awarded the Thesis Prize 2002 of the Austrian Society for Allergology and Immunology.
Then, he continued for three years as a postdoctoral fellow in the Medical University of Vienna. Since 2006, he has been a senior scientist heading the research group Cell migration at the Molecular Immunology Unit of the Institute of Hygiene and Applied Immunology (Center for Pathophysiology, Infectiology & Immunology; Medical University of Vienna).
As a principal investigator, he successfully supervised several granted projects (2xFWF, 4xVEGA, 3xAPVV). His data were published in high-ranked journals including, e.g. Circulation Research – IF 16.5; they are well-cited and recognized by Austrian and Slovak media - der Standard (http://derstandard.at/1297216305472/Krebsforschung-Peptid-gegen-Tumorwachstum-und-Metastasierung ) and Pravda (http://zurnal.pravda.sk/rozhovory/clanok/332217-nemusime-letiet-na-jupiter/ ). Some of his findings have been patented.
During his career he has gained a profound knowledge in molecular machineries underlying various physiological and pathological processes, such as immune responses, signal transduction, fibrinolysis, tumour migration and angiogenesis. He also possesses a profound skill in cellular assays, biochemical methods, microscopy and techniques of recombinant DNA and RNAi; he is experienced also in work with animal models.
Furthermore, in the course of his project periods several doctoral students and diploma students accomplished their thesis programs both in Austria and Slovakia. The success of their work is documented by their publications, awards and current job positions.
From the beginning of 2014, Vladimir has moved his research from Vienna back to Bratislava to found Laboratory of Molecular Immunology in the Institute of Molecular Biology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. He continues his scientific career in the joint platform together with the Medical University of Vienna. He believes that in this way more talented students from Slovakia will be motivated to choose biomedical science for their future careers, and that more advances and progress will be achieved in research within both scientific communities, in Slovakia and Austria.
He is invited to conferences for lectures or chairmanship, he is active in reviewing processes for scientific journals. He leads seminars of molecular immunology for PhD. and master students (in the Medical University in Vienna and Comenius University in Bratislava, respectively).
He is a coauthor of the textbook Clasical experiments in biochemistry. He is active also in popularization of science: He wrote the book Vzdelani pribuzni (Perfekt, 2013) about Slovak scientists. He publishes blogs and articles about science in many magazines, and, last but not least, regarding science, he has been interviewed by several media (Radio FM, TV Ruzinov, Pravda).
During pandemic, he became a founder member of the initiative Veda pomáha – Covid-19; and he had been many times addressed by various renowned media to express his professional opinion on current topics associated with COVID-19 (e.g. Lancet – https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(20)32261-3/fulltext ).
