About

Dr Vivek S. Kale is an entrepreneur / technocrat of successful GIS enterprises in the fields of map-data development, content delivery for GIS based applications in telecom, fleet management and terrain / site assessment for mining, infrastructure and energy for over 10 years. Prior to joining the commercial world, he had a successful academic career at the Department of Geology, University of Pune, ending as a Reader in Structural Geology and Remote Sensing. He is a former Adjunct Professor in Earth Sciences at IIT (B), Mumbai. He is also the founder and Managing Trustee of a non-profit organisation, ACWADAM that is a water resources consultant to the Planning Commission of the Government of India. in addition to his professional assignment, and continues his academic activities under that banner, besides his professional duties.

Besides more than 140 research papers, his achievements included the Young Scientist Award (1987) and the UGC Research Scientist Award (1989). He has been and continues to be the PI/Co-PI in numerous research projects funded by DST, CSIR, ISRO, MoES, AMD, etc. He was the only Indian representative at the IUGS project on spectral signature of rocks and minerals in the early 1990’s when hyperspectral remote sensing was in its formative stages. He continues his affiliations and contributions to Geology; as an active Fellow / Member of the Geological Societies of India and America; Indian Society of Remote Sensing, Indian Geophysical Union, Indian Science Congress Association, etc. and a contributing expert / consultant to several expert committees of the scientific world as well as the government (including the Planning Commission).

As the CEO of Kalyani Net Ventures Ltd, he successfully led the site selection of more than 600 MW of installed wind turbines (with Enercon in India and Sri Lanka - 2005- 2008); release of the first operational navigational data in India (with Garmin- 2007), the largest installed fleet management system for the IOCL tankers spanning more than 25,000 tankers across the country (with CMC- 2009), on the backdrop of the land-base for the first successful implementation of the network management system for Hughes Telecom in Mumbai (with IEL-SMALLWORLD - 2002). He steered the first MOU with the Survey of India under the New Map Policy-2005 leading to the release of the first SOI approved digital data of the road-network of the country (2008), followed by the establishment of the JV with TeleAtlas NV for the development of a high-resolution navigational map data of India.

As the Head - Geospatial in Kalyani Global Engineering Pvt. Ltd, his largest current responsibility is to implement an elaborate GIS based technology solution for of a multiproduct SEZ spanning more than 5,000 hectares; and the construction management system for several large industrial projects across India; involving investments of >7000 crore Rupees. The Web-enabled GIS system installed by KGEPL was awarded the UBM-Information Week Diamond Edge Award-2013 for enabling an integrative management support system for infrastructure and land-development projects.
