Dibyendu Deb
Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Indian Agricultural Research Institute
About
Dr. Dibyendu Deb is a Senior Scientist (Agricultural Statistics) at ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, Assam, India, where he leads research at the intersection of agricultural statistics, remote sensing, and data science. He holds a Ph.D. in Agricultural Statistics from Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya (2017), for which he received the Best Ph.D. Thesis Award from the Range Management Society of India, and an M.Sc. in Computer Application/Agricultural Statistics from ICAR-IARI, New Delhi (2006).
His research integrates statistical modelling, machine learning, and geospatial analytics to address applied problems in agriculture and natural resource management, with particular focus on crop yield prediction, biomass estimation, and vegetation monitoring using satellite remote sensing data (Sentinel-2, Landsat) processed through Google Earth Engine. He is the developer of two open-source R packages published on CRAN — vegIndexCalc, a toolkit for computing vegetation indices from remote sensing imagery, and equiBSPD, for constructing balanced split-plot experimental designs — both aimed at improving accessibility of quantitative tools for agricultural researchers.
He has authored or co-authored over 20 peer-reviewed publications in journals including IEEE Access, PLoS ONE, Frontiers in Plant Science, and Geocarto International, alongside several edited volumes and book chapters. His current work focuses on machine learning-based yield prediction for smallholder cropping systems in North-East India, statistical experimental design, and the application of geospatial technologies to precision agriculture.
Alongside his research, he teaches courses in agricultural statistics and agri-informatics, associated with postgraduate research, and has served as a resource person in national training programme on statistical and remote sensing methods for agricultural scientists.
