About
An enthusiastic and self-motivated researcher with 10+ years of research experience in the field of microbial genetics, biochemistry and synthetic biology.
My PhD thesis work (2007-2013) involved studying the RNA degradosome and enzymes involved in RNA metabolism in cold-adapted psychrotroph Pseudomonas syringae Lz4W. My PhD training gave me a solid foundation in microbial genetics, molecular cloning, biochemistry and RNA biology techniques.
I also worked as a Senior research fellow (2013-2015) on an interesting collaborative project, where we successfully knocked-out the gene encoding exoribonuclease RNase R in Xanthomonas pv oryzae oryzae, a bacterium that causes rice blight, making it less infectious. This experience further strengthened by background in microbial genetics and molecular biology.
The core theme of my postdoc work (2015-current) is understanding the effect of synonymous mutations / codon usage on fitness of bacteria. I used a synthetic GFP reporter library to show that synonymous mutations can cause RNA toxicity in Escherichia coli. I also performed whole genome sequencing of genetic suppressors of RNA toxicity in E. coli, giving me a great exposure to NGS and data analysis. I am currently using high throughput proteomics and metabolomics to study mechanisms of RNA toxicity in bacteria.
