Broad Research Interests
(a) Genetic and developmental bases of individual differences in emotionality and their contribution to vulnerability for anxiety, depression, and substance use disorders, studied primarily in animal models.
(b) Monoaminergic and GABAergic mechanisms underlying psychiatric illness, investigated through complementary studies of postmortem human brain tissue and rodent models.
Biography
I am a neuroscientist at the University of Michigan, where I serve as a Research Laboratory Specialist Lead. My expertise spans neuroanatomy, molecular biology, biochemistry, advanced microscopy, and large-scale quantitative image analysis.
Current Research
My ongoing work focuses on two interrelated areas.
Mesolimbic circuit plasticity in addiction.
Using brain-wide cellular mapping approaches, I study how initial exposure to opioids and psychostimulants—and the subsequent development of behavioral sensitization—engage distinct neuronal populations across the nucleus accumbens (NAc), ventral tegmental area (VTA), and dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN). I also examine region- and phenotype-specific microglial transcriptional profiles in the NAc of selectively bred high- and low-emotional-reactivity (bHR/bLR) rats, with emphasis on complement signaling, phagocytic pathways, and metabolic regulation.
Molecular neuropathology of psychiatric disorders.
Using multiplexed fluorescence in situ hybridization chain reaction (HCR-FISH), I map the distribution of major GABAergic interneuron subtypes—including somatostatin, cholecystokinin, and vasoactive intestinal peptide neurons—across frontal cortical regions in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
Earlier Research Contributions
During my postdoctoral training at the University of Michigan (2014–2022), I established and optimized multiple cellular and molecular neuroanatomical approaches that remain core laboratory capabilities. These include brain-tissue transparency methods (CLARITY, iDISCO+), HCR-FISH in cleared thick tissues, and tyramide signal amplification FISH.
I also contributed to studies on individual differences in emotional reactivity, showing that high-reactivity phenotypes are encoded by a molecularly distinct ventral hippocampus–basolateral amygdala (vHC–BLAp) circuit regulated by the glucocorticoid receptor. Related work examined how early-life maternal stress programs the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) and associated limbic circuits to shape long-term emotional phenotypes.
Additional projects included the cellular and behavioral characterization of a novel Oprm1-Cre knock-in rat, studies of µ-opioid receptor–expressing NAc neurons in heroin self-administration, and research on peptidergic regulation of feeding behavior demonstrating an imbalance between hypothalamic POMC and AgRP neuronal populations (PNAS, 2018).
Doctoral Research
I received my Ph.D. in Neuroscience from AIIMS, New Delhi (2014). My dissertation investigated how prenatal exposure to chronic high-intensity noise and music affects auditory system development in an avian model (Gallus gallus domesticus). Using synaptic, cellular, biochemical, and metabolomic analyses, the work characterized excitatory–inhibitory imbalance in the avian auditory cortex analogue.
