About
Dr. Sanjeev R. Singh is a communication professor and digital media researcher whose scholarship lies at the crossroads of data-driven journalism, social/political structures, and the evolution of newsrooms. Dr. Singh's scholarship is characterized by the empirical study of digital broadcasting environments and the creation of longitudinal datasets which bridge the gap between media practice and political sociology.
Major Research Contribution: The Mehta-Singh Social Index
Dr. Singh's major contribution to the study of political communication is the Mehta-Singh Social Index. As one of the developers of the vast dataset, he has led efforts to document and analyze the social background information (caste and social status) of 4,415 Indian political leaders over a thirty year time span. The Mehta-Singh Social Index serves as an important empirical foundation for researchers who seek to understand issues such as representation, social mobility, and the evolving composition of Indian leadership since India's liberalization.
Digital Newsroom Evolution & Media Strategy
In addition to studying the structural and pedagogical changes occurring within digital journalism, Dr. Singh examines the incorporation of Mobile Journalism (Mojo) and multimedia storytelling into newsrooms. Building upon his twenty years of experience working with large international media conglomerates (such as the Times Group and NDTV), Dr. Singh studies the role of:
Ethics of Data-Driven Reporting: Interactive media platforms and data visualizations in real time (for example, the Indian General Elections and Union Budgets) as principal objects of study.
Cross-Platform Content Ecosystems: How the use of centralized digital multimedia engines affect journalists operating in regional languages.
Academic Dissemination: His scholarship has been disseminated through peer reviewed journals that are listed in the Scopus, ABDC and UGC CARE databases. A focus area of his scholarship includes innovation within newsrooms and the digitization of legacy media.
Global Academic Partnerships & Public Scholarship
Dr. Singh has participated in several research based programming partnerships with the Harvard India Center and Columbia University focused on specialized audio podcasting and the dissemination of knowledge. In addition to publishing in academic journals, Dr. Singh also practices Public Scholarship; his data-driven insights about politics are disseminated through long form analytical articles for The Times of India and Firstpost and his political travelogues have attracted significant public engagement (over 10 million page views on his blog).
