Professor Padmasani Venkat Ramanan is a Professor of Pediatrics with over three decades of experience spanning clinical pediatrics, medical education, clinical research and academic leadership. She completed her undergraduate medical education and postgraduate residency in Pediatrics at Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi, and subsequently joined Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (SRIHER), Chennai, as faculty. She completed her MRCPCH in the United Kingdom during a sabbatical and subsequently returned to SRIHER, where she has served as Professor of Pediatrics for the past 20 years. She was Head of the Department of Pediatrics from November 2009 to October 2014.
Her clinical and academic interests include pediatric infectious diseases, vaccinology, pediatric nutrition and growth, and infant feeding. She established a Clinical Fellowship in Pediatric Infectious Diseases under the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Academy. She is a pediatrician member of the multidisciplinary cleft team at SRIHER and serves as Nutrition Advisor to Smile Train India.
Her research experience encompasses vaccinology, pediatric nutrition, clinical research, evidence synthesis, literature reviews, scientific writing and research methodology. She has served as Principal Investigator in 16 multicentric vaccine trials, including landmark bOPV and subsequent mOPV trials sponsored by the World Health Organization. She has supervised five PhD scholars, served as co-guide for two PhD scholars and as a member of Research Advisory Committees for two doctoral researchers. She has also supervised 18 postgraduate MD dissertations, approximately half of which have resulted in publications.
She has authored/co-authored 95 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals, in addition to four textbooks, book chapters and training manuals. Her academic work includes research supervision, mentorship, manuscript development, evidence synthesis and capacity building in research.
International Programme Experience: As Nutrition Advisor to Smile Train India since 2019, she has established nutrition care pathways for infants with cleft lip and palate and provides technical and academic guidance on nutritional assessment, feeding support, growth monitoring and counselling. She has contributed to nutrition programmes, research initiatives and educational resources for Smile Train partner hospitals.
She has adapted and delivered structured pediatric nutrition training programmes for multidisciplinary healthcare teams in India, Bangladesh, Indonesia and the Philippines. She also undertook an observership at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh, while preparing for her MRCPCH clinical examination, and has participated in and presented her work at several international scientific conferences.
She continues to be interested in contributing to pediatric research, evidence synthesis, scientific writing, research mentorship and international academic collaborations, particularly in pediatric infectious diseases, vaccinology, nutrition and growth.
