I am Shanmugam Saravanan, Professor & Associate Director of Genomics, Infectious Diseases Research, Dr D Y Patil Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University), Pimpri, Pune, India, highly innovative and accomplished Molecular virologist. I have been involved in HIV, HBV, and HCV research for more than 20 years. My key area involves studying molecular characterization of HBV, HCV, HIV Drug resistance, sequence analysis and characterization of different HIV subtypes. My current area of interest is to study HIV/HBV/HCV viral interactions, natural history of HBV & HCV and also to develop/validate the assays that quantifies the level of residual latent and replication-competent virus; to measure plasma HIV RNA (single-copy assay), cell-associated RNA, episomal DNA (extra chromosomal DNA, including two-long-terminal-repeat (2- LTR) circles), ratios of non-integrated to integrated DNA to measure & characterize HIV-1 viral reservoirs that cause rebounding of viral levels and also to investigate strategies that lead to purging of the latent reservoir and a cure for HIV/AIDS. Understanding HBV viral and host factors, underlying HBV pathogenesis, reactivation, including coinfections with other hepatitis viruses and HIV and also developing biomarkers for HBV Cure research.
