About
Dr. Anirban Mukherjee is a Senior Scientist in Agricultural Extension at the ICAR-Research Complex for Eastern Region (ICAR-RCER), Patna, where he has been serving since 2013. With more than a decade of professional experience, he has established himself as a committed researcher, practitioner, and thought leader in the field of agricultural extension, rural innovation, and farmer empowerment. His career has been dedicated to bridging the gap between science and society by ensuring that knowledge, technology, and innovations reach the farmers who need them most.
At the core of Dr. Mukherjee’s work lies a passion for empowering smallholder and tribal farmers. His research, field interventions, and capacity-building efforts focus on participatory approaches, farmer-led organizations, and community-based innovations that foster resilience, sustainability, and inclusivity. He has been actively involved in developing models that integrate traditional wisdom with modern science to address the complex challenges faced by farming communities. His approach goes beyond technology dissemination—it emphasizes co-creation, participatory decision-making, and long-term livelihood security for rural households.
Over the years, Dr. Mukherjee has worked across diverse agro-ecological regions, from the Himalayan hill farming systems to the resource-challenged Eastern Gangetic Plains. This wide exposure has provided him with a nuanced understanding of local contexts, enabling him to design extension models and interventions that are context-specific, scalable, and sustainable. He has led or contributed to more than 20 research projects funded by ICAR and other agencies, covering themes such as tribal farming systems, integrated livelihood models, farmer producer organizations (FPOs), participatory rural appraisal (PRA), and sustainable agricultural practices.
His scholarly contributions include over 50 scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, and popular articles. These cover a range of issues, from technology adoption dynamics and farming system innovations to behavioral insights and participatory tools for agricultural development. He has also co-developed several practical tools, methodologies, and models that are being used for field-level extension and participatory research. His research outcomes are not confined to academic circles but have direct implications for policy formulation, institutional development, and grassroots-level extension practice.
Dr. Mukherjee also serves as the Chief Editor of Food and Scientific Reports, a monthly magazine that has gained recognition as a platform for disseminating research, innovations, and insights in an accessible manner. Under his editorial leadership, the magazine has become a bridge between researchers, policymakers, farmers, and students. His editorial vision is rooted in the belief that research should not remain locked in academic publications but should be simplified, popularized, and made actionable for all stakeholders in the agricultural value chain.
Beyond his research and editorial responsibilities, Dr. Mukherjee is deeply engaged in mentoring young scholars, training extension professionals, and building capacities of farmers and rural youth. He has delivered lectures, organized training programs, and facilitated workshops on participatory methods, farming systems research, innovation management, and rural development. His guidance and mentorship have inspired many students and young professionals to pursue careers in agricultural extension and rural development with a focus on societal impact.
Dr. Mukherjee’s current research interests span several emerging domains, including:
Tribal Farming Systems: Documenting traditional knowledge, analyzing farming dynamics, and integrating sustainability and livelihood frameworks.
Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs): Designing tools for leadership selection, governance, and market linkages.
Sustainable Livelihood Models: Exploring integrated farming systems, renewable energy use, and climate-resilient practices.
Extension Innovations: Leveraging behavioral models, agent-based simulations, ICT, and data-driven tools to predict and influence technology adoption.
His ongoing efforts include writing books and academic resources on PRA, tribal farming systems, participatory extension, and rural innovations, which aim to provide practical guidance to researchers, practitioners, and development professionals. He is also engaged in policy-oriented research, contributing to strategies for accelerating variety replacement, enhancing farmers’ year-round income, and promoting convergence models for sustainable agriculture.
A recipient of recognition from professional societies and institutions, Dr. Mukherjee continues to uphold a vision of cre
