About
• Started his medical career in 1982 as Research Officer in the Multicenter ICMR study on “ Phenomenology and Natural History of Acute Psychosis” at Christian Medical College(CMC) Vellore, Tamil Nadu ,India.
• Had Post-graduate training in Psychiatry (DPM 1985 & MD 1987) at CMC Vellore and worked there as Lecturer till 1991
• Joined Government Medical College (GMC) Thrissur in 1991.Was Professor and Head of the Department for more than a decade till retirement in May 2020
• Was active in community mental health research and service development during his career as a medical teacher
• Scaling up of dementia care services through outreach services was made possible in Thrissur District through community-based research and engagement with the Local Self Government.
• Took the initiative to build research capacity among the faculty and trainees of GMC Thrissur. Was the Chairman of the Institutional Research Committee and also member of the Institutional Ethics committee for many years.
• Is a recognized PhD Guide at Kerala University of Health Sciences and had supervised many Postgraduate trainees in research.
• Was the National Chairman of the Geriatric Psychiatry Specialty Section of Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS) and currently is the National Chairman of the Community Psychiatry Specialty Section of IPS
• Was the Associate Editor of two PubMed Indexed Journals (Indian Journal of Psychiatry & Indian Journal of Psychological Medicine)
• Was the Guest Editor of a Special Supplement on Dementia brought out by the Indian Journal of Psychiatry in 2009
• Was the President of Indian Association of Geriatric Mental Health, a multidisciplinary organization affiliated to International Psychogeriatric Association
• Received awards /fellowship from National Academy of Medical Sciences as well as Indian Council of Medical Research for contributions in the field of Dementia Research in India
• Is a member of 10/66 Dementia Research Group since its inception in 1998 https://1066.alzint.org/
• Had assisted the WHO in development of the “Dementia Module” of the mhGAP Intervention Guide https://www.who.int/publications/i/item/9789241549790
Joined the Kerala University of Health Sciences ,Thrissur,Kerala as the Dean (Research) in December 2020 and is in charge of the PhD program there. Is actively engaged in research capacity building and public health research
• Interacts with the State Government in Kerala and Local Self Governments and advise on matters related to development of services for the aging population.
