About
Dr. Ramkrishna Sen is a Professor and Former Head, Department of Biotechnology; Former Chairperson, School of Bioscience; Former Chairperson, Central Research Facility (Life Science); , Former Joint Faculty (P K Sinha Center for Bioenergy & Renewables), IIT Kharagpur, India. Prof. Sen administered as the Vice Chairman and Chairman, IIT Kharagpur for two National level Examinations, namely GATE and JAM from 2015-2018. Prof. Sen is currently the Professor-in-Charge, Advanced Lab for Plant Genetic Engineering, Before joining IIT Kharagpur in 2004, Prof. Sen worked as an Assistant Professor in BITS, Pilani for about two years and as Deputy Manager & Manager (R&D-Biotech) in Cadila Pharmaceuticals Ltd., Ahmedabad for about three years. He served as a Fulbright Visiting Faculty in Columbia University in the City New York, USA. Prof. Sen is a Bioprocess Engineer/Technologist by qualification, training and profession. He has been engaged in R&D activities in the areas of Healthcare, Energy, Environment & Water, with a focus on Green Process & Product Development in Microbial & Microalgal Biorefinery models for Biofuels; Carbon sequestration; Waste valorization; Marine Microbial Biosurfactants; Biopolymers; Anticancer Biomolecules; New-gen antibiotics; Bioremediation and MEOR. So far, 26 Ph.D and about 60 MS/M.Tech Students have received their degrees under his supervision. Right now, he is guiding/co-guiding 3 PDFs and 17 Ph.D students. He has about 255 publications in international and national journals, books and conference proceedings with about 12100 citations. He has filed 14 patents including one US, one European and one PCT to his credit. He is serving as an Associate Editor of Phytomedicine (Elsevier) and a member of the editorial board of three international journals including Scientific Reports of Springer-Nature. Prof. Sen has completed 30 sponsored and 3 consultancy projects and currently, has been implementing 9 sponsored projects. He has published 7 books/edited volumes so far with renowned publishers of USA & UK. Prof. Sen has featured in the list of Top 2% of the most cited Scientists in the World as recognized by the Stanford University, USA and has also been honoured with The Wellcome Trust Institutional Partnership project (Wellcome iTPA; 2019); Distinguished Alumnus award by Jadavpur University, Calcutta (2017), Fulbright Visiting Professor Award (2013-14); Runner-up prize in National Award for Technology Innovation in Petrochemicals & Downstream Plastic Processing Industries, Government of India (2012) and UKIERI (British Council) Grant for Visits of University of London, Royal Holloway University of London and University of Ulster, Ireland (2007). Prof. Sen has collaborations with several international universities. He jointly guided two Ph.D students, who have received their degrees from the University of Melbourne, Australia and the University of Auckland, New Zealand. He has extensively traveled abroad and delivered lectures at many reputed universities. He is a founder member of the Global Biorenewables Research Society and Biological Engineering Society (India). He is also a life member of the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers and member of European and Asian Federations of Biotechnology.
