About

Suvrajeet Sen is Professor at the Daniel J. Epstein Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Southern California. Prior to joining USC, he was a Professor at Ohio State University (2006-2012), and University of Arizona (1982-2006). He has also served as the Program Director of OR as well as Service Enterprise Systems at the National Science Foundation. Professor Sen’s research is devoted to many categories of optimization models, and he has published over one hundred and twenty refereed publications, with the vast majority of them appearing in major international journals such as Operations Research, Management Science, Mathematics of Operations Research, Mathematical Programming, SIAM J, on Optimization and others. The major focus of his research deals with models, algorithms and applications of Stochastic Programming problems. He has served on several editorial boards, including Operations Research as Area Editor for Optimization and as Associate Editor for SIAM J. on Optimization, INFORMS J. on Optimization, INFORMS J. on Computing, Journal of Telecommunications Systems, Mathematical Programming B, and Operations Research. He also serves as an Advisory Editor for several newer journals. Professor Sen was instrumental in founding the INFORMS Optimization Society in 1995, and served as its Chair (2015-16). Except for his years at NSF, he has received continuous extramural research funding from NSF and other basic research agencies such as Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), Dept. of Energy (DOE) - Advanced Scientific Computing Research, and Office of Naval Research (ONR), totaling over eleven million dollars as PI over his career. He led a team of researchers (faculty and former students) who were jointly recognized by the INFORMS Computing Society Award in 2015 for “seminal work” on Stochastic Mixed-Integer Programming. Professor Sen is also a Fellow of INFORMS (which includes merely 0.1% of members in INFORMS), and has been a Distinguished Speaker at several universities (Texas A&M, Arizona State University, and has lectured at many leading universities including UC-Berkeley, Cambridge (UK), Michigan, Stanford, and many others. He has been honored as a distinguished alumni of Virginia Tech (Ph.D.1982). He came to Virginia Tech after completing his B.E. (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering from Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani in 1977. He has been recognized by all his alma maters as a Distinguished Alum. Professor Sen has given Plenary Lectures at major conferences including INFORMS Annual Conference (2016), International Conference on Stochastic Programming (2001, 2007), Operations Research Society of India (2006, 2018), INFORMS Optimization Society Conference (2012), INFORMS Computing Society Conference (2015). Some of his most rewarding experiences come from speaking to graduate student chapters (e.g., INFORMS*) about research careers as an Operations Research faculty member.
