About
Dr. Ruma Sarkar is an Assistant Professor at B. D. Patel Institute of Allied and Healthcare Sciences, Charotar University of Science and Technology (CHARUSAT), India. Dr. Ruma Sarkar's research focuses on cancer biology and anticancer drug discovery, with particular emphasis on the discovery, mechanistic characterization, and biological evaluation of natural product-derived therapeutics, including phytochemicals, probiotics, postbiotics, and microbial metabolite-derived therapeutics, as well as chemically synthesized anticancer compounds for cancer management. Her research integrates molecular oncology, computational biology, and multi-omics approaches to identify novel therapeutic targets, elucidate molecular mechanisms underlying anticancer activity, and discover biomarkers associated with therapeutic response. Her research interests encompass molecular target-based anticancer drug discovery, including the modulation of heat shock proteins (HSP90), thioredoxin reductase 1 (TrxR1), histone deacetylases (HDACs), the Nrf2/ARE signaling pathway, and oxidative stress/ROS-mediated signaling. She has a particular interest in combination cancer therapy and synergistic therapeutic strategies that enhance treatment efficacy, overcome therapeutic resistance, and improve the therapeutic potential of conventional chemotherapeutic agents. Her research further explores cancer–microbiome interactions, microbe-derived bioactive compounds, cancer signaling pathways, network pharmacology, molecular docking, and experimental validation of novel anticancer agents. She is particularly interested in integrating in silico, in vitro, and experimental approaches to accelerate the discovery and biological validation of innovative anticancer therapeutics. Presently, she is guiding 5 PhD students and has guided the research work of 12 postgraduate dissertation students at BDIAS, CHARUSAT.
