About
Dr Samit Kumar Nandi completed B. V. Sc. & A. H. and M. V. Sc in 1991 and 1993 from Bidhan Chandra Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, respectively, and Ph. D. in 2006 from West Bengal University of Animal & Fishery Sciences. Prof. Nandi joined the University in 2000 as a Lecturer in the Department of Veterinary Surgery and Radiology at this university. He served as Head of the Department from 2011-13 and 2018- 2020.
Dr Nandi's journey is one of extraordinary perseverance and dedication. Hailing from a rural, economically underprivileged farming family, he overcame formidable challenges to rise to the pinnacle of academic and scientific excellence. With over 31 years of rich experience, he began his career as a field veterinarian, serving in remote regions of Sikkim and West Bengal, where he selflessly extended his expertise to the underprivileged livestock owners in difficult terrains. His grassroots engagement remains a cornerstone of his lifelong commitment to societal welfare. He later transitioned into academia, where he has served with distinction, mentoring undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral students who have since gone on to achieve distinction in research laboratories, academic institutions, and the biomedical industry, both in India and abroad. Prof. Nandi has made a significant contribution to the field of biomedical research using orthopaedic, soft tissue, cartilage tissue, and vascular tissue biomaterials with special reference to the utilization of biological wastes in collaboration with premier Indian research Institutes like CSIR-Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute, Kolkata, Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, Kharagpur, Roorkee, Indian Institute of Science, Education, and Research, Kolkata, R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, Jadavpur University, NIT, Rourkela, Manipal University, Jaipur, etc. His research has a tremendous scope in using such biomaterials for animal and human surgical problems.
Based on his research accomplishments, Prof. Nandi has received several coveted national awards, including the Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Award for Outstanding Research in Agricultural Sciences, 2021, Jawaharlal Nehru Award for Outstanding Post-Graduate Agricultural Research 2007 of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, National Bioscience Award 2008 for career development, Biotech Product and Process Development and Commercialization Award 2013 of the Department of Biotechnology, Tata Innovation Fellowship from the Department of Biotechnology, CSIR Technology Award-2010- as a part of an Award-winning Team, Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, Government of India, and “Excellence of Animal Biotechnology” from Society of Applied Biotechnology, India. He also received the National Teaching Excellence Award 2016 from the International Benevolent Research Foundation, the Science Excellence Award 2015 from the Foundation for Science and Environment, Kolkata, West Bengal, and the Best Teacher Award 2016 & 2017 from his Parent University at the Faculty as well as from the university level and Late Dr. P. S. Khankhoje Gold Medal from Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth, Akola. He has completed 18 research projects funded by ICAR, DBT, SERB, ANRF, Government of India, and is presently running four projects funded by the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India. Prof. Nandi received a Travel Grant award from Indo-US Science and Technology Forum, New Delhi, to work as Adjunct Faculty in 2012 at the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, Washington State University, USA. He has supervised/supervised over 18 Master’s and 12 PhD students in Veterinary Surgery and Radiology and allied subjects. His students have moved to academia and labs within and outside India. He is a prolific writer and has contributed more than 69 scientific papers to National and 150 International journals of repute, 3 books, 30 International book chapters, granted 5 Patents, and applied for another 9 National patents, and has citations of 6913 with an h-index of 45. He published a few papers with the Department of Bioengineering, University of Pittsburgh, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Tufts University, Medford, Massachusetts, and School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, Washington State University, United States. He is a reviewer of several journals all over the Globe. He has given several invited and contributed presentations at various national and international symposia, national Institutes, and labs. He is an Expert Member of the Selection Committee of Central Agricultural University, Imphal for the post of Professor, University of Kalyani, National Experts for the Veterinary Surgery and Radiology of Central Agricultural University (Imphal), Co-opted committee Member of the reconstituted PAC on Interdisciplinary Biological Sciences and Power PAC for of Science and Engineering Research Board, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India.
