About

Dr. Sandeep Joshi is Senior Scientific Officer , Rural Energy and Infrastructure Division at Mahatma Gandhi Institute for Rural Industrialization (MGIRI), Wardha, a National institute under the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), Government of India. He is actively engaged in the development of science and technology interventions for rural industrialization, with a strong focus on renewable energy–based and frugal innovations for MSMEs and the Village Industries sector.

His professional work spans solar photovoltaic and solar thermal systems, biomass energy, and man–machine integrated systems, leading to the development of several field-deployable technologies. These include solar dryers, photovoltaic–thermal (PVT) systems, solar cooking and solar distillation technologies, charcoal-making systems, and portable solar-powered devices, designed for applications in agriculture, defence, and MSMEs, with an emphasis on local resource utilization and sustainability.

Dr. Joshi completed his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2008, securing the first rank in the university and a Gold Medal. He completed his Master’s degree in Heat Power Engineering in 2011 and was awarded the Ph.D. degree in 2018 by Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), Nagpur. His doctoral research focused on the development of Beam Split Solar Photovoltaic Thermal (BSPVT) systems using different liquid spectrum filters, contributing to advanced hybrid solar energy systems.

He has over 15 years of experience in research and academia. His innovation portfolio includes 11 granted patents, 14 registered designs, and twenty-five patent applications under examination at the Indian Patent Office. He has authored more than 60 research publications in reputed international journals, including 27 SCI/E-indexed and 25 Scopus-indexed papers.

In June 2023, Dr. Joshi received an International Travel Grant from the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), Government of India, enabling him to present his research on Electric Vehicles at Edinburgh Napier University, Scotland. He also undertook research visits to England and Northern Ireland, strengthening international collaboration.
Dr. Joshi is a recipient of the prestigious IEI Young Engineers Award 2020–21, received at Vigyan Bhavan New Delhi. He was also honored by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Maharashtra at the Grand Patent & Idea Fest 2023 for contributions in IPR and patents, and has received recognitions from CSIR–NEERI and NIT Trichy for his research contributions.

He serves as a reviewer for reputed international journals and research funding agencies in Poland and Hong Kong and is associated with the Board of National and International Linkages, the Office of Innovation, Incubation, and Linkages at RTM Nagpur University, and the CSIR–Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research (CIMFR), Dhanbad and Nagpur. Under his supervision, one doctoral scholar has completed a Ph.D. in Solar Photovoltaics, and he has guided more than eighteen postgraduate research projects in solar energy.
