About
In 1998, Dr. G. Archunan (my mentor), a pioneer mammalian pheromone scientist in Tamilnadu, India introduced me the fascinating field of pheromone biology (Chemical Ecology). Since then, I have been engaged in pheromone research for the past twenty years, well assisted by my research students, postdocs and collaborators. My primary research started with identification and characterization of mice pheromones and their role in chemical signaling (Sex attraction). Our team made several findings like identification of male specific pheromone and estrus (Ovulation) specific pheromone in urine and gland of rodents (mice and rats). We believed that this pheromone technology can be used for trapping rodents and it will be effective and pest-specific (Environment friendly). Hence, I along with Dr. Archunan’s team (My seniors) identified pheromone compounds in three different rat species, (Rattus rattus, Tatera indica, Millardia meldata) and tried to use these compounds to trap the rats in the house and fields. We were able to get only partial success (only in lab and not in fields) because of the volatile nature of pheromone compounds. Having gained expertise in rodent pheromone biology research, we developed interest towards livestock production so as to use this pheromone technology to develop a cost-effective kit for estrus (ovulation) detection and artificial insemination in farm animals. Our team identified estrus related pheromones in goat, cow and buffalo. Currently, our team is planning to use metagenomic approaches in faecal microbiota to detect the reproductive status and to correlate with pheromones of farm animals. Further, we focus on endocrine modulating role of pheromones/allelochemicals in alleviating the reproductive toxic effects of pollutants (Endocrine disruptors) in rodent and fish model. In addition, a few of my students working on PCOD, Diabetes and cancer (Nanotechnology
