About
Dr. Chaudhuri received B. Sc. (with Honors in Mathematics) from Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, M. Sc. in Applied Mathematics from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, and Ph. D. degree in image processing and pattern recognition from Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata under supervision of Prof. B. B. Chaudhuri. The title of his thesis was “Some studies on density estimation and data clustering techniques”. Recently he has retired as a senior scientist and DGM at DRDO Integration Centre, Panagarh, India.
Dr. Chaudhuri was a project scientist at Indian Statistical Institute in ISI-ADRIN Project (collaborated by ISI and Dept. of Space, Govt. of India). He was a research associate of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) at ISI, Kolkata. He was a Scientist at Defence Electronics Applications Laboratory, Dehradun, India from July 1996 to December 2000 and December 2006 to middle of July 2014. Also, he was an associate professor of Defence Institute of Advance Technology (DIAT) (Deemed university), Pune during 2001-2003 (July). He was a visiting professor at University of Nebraska, USA in the Dept. of Computer Science and Eng. during 2003-2004. He was posted at Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur for short duration nearly one and half years for a missile tracking project by EOTS system. He has been transferred in public interest from DEAL, Dehradun to DRDO Integration Centre, Panagarh, Burdwan, West Bengal as DGM & DMS in middle of July 2014. Recently, on 31st October 2021 he has retired from DRDO Integration Centre, Panagarh as a Director (joint Secretory) rank of Govt of India. Presently, he is professor at Techno India University, Kolkata. He also visited many other Universities and Institutes within India to deliver invited lectures. He has been a member of the program/organizing committees of many national and international conferences. He also served as a Session Chair of international conference (5th International Conference on Signal, Image Processing (SIPO 2021), Chennai. He has contributed significantly in pattern recognition, image processing, computer vision and remote sensing research, as revealed by his publications. He made an influential contribution in automatic target detection from multi-sensor satellite images for Scene Correlation Area Navigation of AGNI Missile guidance system, generated the information map and transmitted it to military intelligence during Kargil war and developed prototype applications for strategic defense intelligence information extraction. This research led to several papers published in IEEE, Springer, Elsevier etc. senior scientist
Previously, he, along with others published a very sound paper in the context of metric distance computation which is closer to the Euclidean distance but involves less computation. He had introduced a theoretical concept of Parzen window size depending on the number of data and spatial arrangement of data for kernel-based density estimation. New seed point detection algorithms and the concept of multi-seed clustering techniques using the estimated density of unknown data were very important contribution during his Ph. D which led to publications in IEEE Trans. SMC. He published a very good paper in the context of bounding box rectangle in Pattern Recognition journal and the paper is cited many times. Practical implementation impact of the paper is very high. One DRDO laboratory, Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (CAIR), Bengaluru is using this concept in Robotics for tracking system.
A project entitles “Design and Development of Algorithms for Vision Based Cognitive Surveillance (VBCS) System for Sensitive Area Monitoring” has been sanctioned for DRDO Young Scientist Laboratory – Cognitive Technology (DYSL-CT), Chennai. He is selected as a Chairman of the Mentor Committee for the said project by the Directorate of Management Council headed by Dr. G. Satheesh Reddy, Director General DRDO & Scientific Advisor of Raksha Montralaya, Govt. of India. He has got lot of experience in advising and guiding others in related fields. He has extensive experience in the field of automatic target detection from satellite imagery. He has successfully completed seven national important projects for the defense services. Many successful systems were handed over to the Indian Army/Navy for which he got three awards from DRDO. He has guided 2 Ph. D. students, 15 M. Tech/M.S. Student Thesis and 40 B. Tech Students Thesis. Two students were awarded the best project award from their corresponding colleges (College of Engineering, Pune and National Institute of Technology, Nagpur). He has authored or coauthored over 52 papers in international journals and conferences in the area of his domain expert. He is Associate Editor and Reviewer in many international journals. He is a senior member of IEEE and fellow of IETE. He has received “Technology Award – 2011” from DRDO Science Forum, Mins. of Defence, Govt. of India in
