About
Dr. Shanta Dutta is a renowned medical researcher who has more than 30 years of research experience in enteric infectious diseases. After having MD (post graduate) degree she has joined ICMR-NICED in 1994 as senior scientist and retired in 2024 as the director. She has earned Ph.D. in Medical Science under Kyushu University, Japan in 2006. Currently she is working as an emeritus scientist of ICMR and attached to Institute of Child Health, Kolkata.
Her research topics of interest: cholera, typhoid, Acute bacterial/ viral diarrhoea and its aetiology, anti microbial resistance (AMR), several viral diseases, developing diagnostic tools and ethno-medicines for prompt diagnosis and management of the ailments. She has been instrumental in establishing VRDL (Viral Research Diagnostic Laboratories) at NICED, in various other Medical colleges both inside and outside the state of West Bengal. As a component of epidemic preparedness, she was involved in training the medical and non medical research professionals, post gratuse fellowstechnical staff, research fellows, student and many more on molecular and conventional diagnostics method used for various viral diseases. She has guided 10 Ph.D. students to complete their dissertations under her supervision and to obtain the degree under various universities. She has published more than 400 articles with H index of 55 and four patents to her credit.
She participated in various field based research, vaccine trials and bioinformatics based research. She took a pivotal role during COVID 19 Pandemic and shouldered every responsibility as and when entrusted on her by various Govt. Agencies. As a token of recognition she was felicitated by several scientific associations/ academies, erudite bodies and Govt. agencies.
She was member of many national and international research committees. To name a few : TWG of WHO-GTFCC for OCV, TWG of WHO-SAGE for typhoid conjugate vaccine, WHO TWG for CTU, NITAG Subcommittee of Cholera, typhoid, National committee for TCV implementation, National Task force committee on HIV-AIDS, epidemic preparedness for disease outbreaks, technology need assessment for environment sensitive diseases, environmental dimension on transmission of AMR etc.
Considering her contributions towards medical research, she has been awarded fellowship of National Academy of Medical Science, Indian National Science Academy, West Bengal Academy of Science and Technology etc.
