Dr. Arvind Agarwal is the Chair and Professor of the Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering Department at Virginia Commonwealth University. Until July 2023, he was a Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Florida International University (FIU), Miami, FL, USA. He served as the Director of the School of Biomedical, Materials and Mechanical Engineering (SBMME) and as Chair of the Mechanical and Materials Engineering Department at FIU. He also served as Associate Dean of the Research College of Engineering and Computing at FIU from 2015-17 and Director of Advanced Materials Research Engineering Institute (AMERI) from 2012-2022. Prof. Agarwal obtained his B.S. from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur and a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Prof. Agarwal worked in the industry as a Materials Scientist at Plasma Processes Inc., Huntsville, AL, for three (3) years before embarking on an academic career at FIU in 2002.
Prof. Agarwal's current research interests include advanced materials processing, cold spray, plasma spray, surface engineering, spark plasma sintering, ultrahigh-temperature ceramics, boron nitride nanotubes (BNNT), graphene-reinforced composites and coatings, nanoindentation, and the mechanical properties of biological materials. Prof. Agarwal has published over 460 technical articles, including 360+ peer-reviewed journal articles, 3 books, and 7 edited books. He has delivered ~250+ presentations at national and international conferences, including 45 keynote/invited lectures. Prof. Agarwal is the inventor of 35 U.S. patents and 8 additional pending patents. His patents have been licensed at both the National and International levels.
Prof. Agarwal is an elected Fellow of ASM International, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the American Ceramic Society (ACerS), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) and the Indian Institute of Metals (IIM)
