About

Dr. Anil Kumar Patel, an Associate Professor at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee vishwavidyalaya, Bilaspur, India is recognized for his pioneering work in innovative bioprocess design for various microbial products.
He has worked before at National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology, Taiwan, as associate Professor for 5 years with a primary focus on sustainable microalgal biorefinery, Dr. Patel's current research endeavors aim to economically produce essential compounds like lutein, astaxanthin, omega fatty acids, and lipids, which apply to health and biofuel applications. Novel bioprocess engineering, metabolic engineering, gene editing, and innovative photobioreactor design are the main approaches in process enhancements.
He obtained his Ph.D. in 2009 in Biotechnology from North Maharashtra University, Jalgaon, India. Over his 15-year previous research career, Prof. Patel has focused on bioprocess development using low-cost materials and industrial waste, with a strong emphasis on waste management and energy production. His work integrates advanced microbial enzyme technology, anaerobic digestion, and dark fermentations. Before his current position, Dr. Patel held significant roles at prestigious institutions worldwide. As a Research Assistant Professor at the Nanobiotechnology lab, Korea University, Seoul, University Blaise Pascal, France, EPFL Switzerland, and HK Baptist University, Hong Kong, he contributed significantly to algal biorefinery, biomass pretreatment, and solid waste management projects. His tenure at the University of Hawaii, USA, envisioned him researching the removal of sulfur from S-containing wastewater treatment using designer biochar for plant sulfur nutrition. Dr. Patel's academic journey also encompasses industrial experience gained during his tenure as an Overseas Bioscience Energy fellow at the advanced DBT-IOC Bioenergy Centre, India. Here, he investigated biohythane (biomethane + biohydrogen) production using ethanol plant wastes. He designed an innovative membrane bioreactor for continuous biohydrogen production and VFA separation from industrial waste at the Institute Pascal, France.
With a rich academic portfolio comprising over 230 research papers, three patents, and three patents, and three books, Dr. Patel is widely recognized as a highly cited researcher, boasting an impressive H-index of 69 and over 18,285 citations. Dr. Patel also played an active role in the academic community as a guest editor for esteemed journals such as Bioresource and Bioprocessing, Bioresource Technology, Science of the Total Environment, Energy and Environment, Journal of Food Science and Technology, Bioresource Technology Reports, Biotechnology and Applied Biochemistry, and Applied Sciences. Additionally, he holds editorial positions in the Journal of Food Science and Technology and serves as an advisory board member in Bioresource Technology Reports, serving the scientific community to the best of his ability.
