About
I have been working in the field of matrix biology for most of my life, and i study the regulation of cellular proteases, mainly matrix metalloproteases. My main research focuses on elucidating the role of MMPs, and the crosstalk with growth factors, receptors, and cell adhesion molecules in cancers, alcohol-induced liver damage, diabetes and endometriosis, Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), attenuating brain stroke and gastric ulcers induced by stress, alcohol, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, and infection by Helicobacter pylori; effects of potential mediators like cytokines, growth factors and transcription factors for H. pylori infection. I also work on understanding the biochemistry behind the mechanism of wound healing, gastric inflammation, gastric ulcers, cancers and the effect of free as well as encapsulated lead bioactive molecules viz. curcumin, melatonin, and antioxidants etc. on them in regard to angiogenesis, collagen synthesis, apoptosis and regulation of MMPs. Additionally, I also investigate the role of single nucleotide polymorphims in promoter regions of MMPs and their associations with the risk of gastric cancer, ovarian cancer, endometriosis, etc.
