About

Dr. S. Mahalaxmi completed her postgraduation in Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics in the year 1986 from Govt. Dental College & hospitals, Ahmadabad, India under Gujarat University. She has been in academics since 1990. She is currently heading the department of Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics at SRM Dental College, Chennai since March 2006.
She has more than 130 publications to her credit, majority in indexed, high impact factor journals.
She has authored a text book titled “Materials used in Dentistry” in 2013, published by Wolters Kluwer India, which is highly acclaimed by faculty and students all over the country, and is being adopted as the standard textbook for Dental Materials subject in many institutions across India. The second edition of this book was released in 2018. She has also contributed chapters in several Endo related textbooks.
She has also completed a DST funded collaborative project as a principal investigator to the tune of 39.34 lakhs. She is a registered PhD supervisor under SRM University and is guiding eight PhD students at present.

Other Achievements:
1. Organized the first ever XXII FODI & XV IES Annual Conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia as the Organizing Secretary.
2. Conducted the 1st of its kind Microscopes program “Microscopes Magnified” in August 2008.
3. Conducted the XI Roots Summit, an international endo meet for the first time in India in Nov, 2014.
4. Won the Prof. J. G. Kannappan Award for the best research article published in IJDR in year 2016.
5. She was the President of Federation of Operative Dentistry of India (FODI) for the year 2008-09.
6. She was an international Board member of AMED (2014-2016, 2016-2018).
7. She was awarded the IADR Cariology Research Group Travel Award for year 2019 at IADR conference, Vancouver, Canada.
8. Awarded the CEAT (Conservative Dentistry & Endodontic Association of Tamil Nadu) Good Samaritan Award (2017) and Dhronacharya Award (2018).

Her areas of interest include Aesthetic Dentistry, Ceramics, Microscope Enhanced Dentistry, Lasers, Nanotechnology in Dentistry and Regeneration of Pulp-Dentin Complex.

She is currently editor of Journal of Interdisciplinary Dentistry, the official journal of the Indian Society for Prosthodontics, Restorative Dentistry & Periodontics (ISPRP). She has been appointed on the editorial board of RDE ( Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics) journal for year 2019-20. She was an interim editor of Journal of Conservative Dentistry, specialty journal of the Indian Association of Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics (IACDE) from May – Nov 2021.

She has undergone extensive training in the use of Dental Operating Microscope and has been using it successfully in her practice for the past more than 10 years. She has been a speaker in various national and international forums. She has conducted various workshops and courses over the years. She maintains an exclusive laser and micro-dentistry practice in Chennai, India.
