About

Dr. Yogesh Snehi is an Associate Professor of History at the School of Liberal Studies, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University Delhi. His research focuses on the social and cultural history of Punjab and South Asia, with particular emphasis on popular sacred shrines, especially Sufi sites. Engaging deeply with religious identities, territoriality, memory, and the longue durée of region formation, his work critically interrogates communalized narratives and offers nuanced insights into sacred geographies and localized processes of social formation.

Dr. Snehi earned his doctoral degree from Panjab University, Chandigarh, where his thesis explored post-1966 state development, education, and gender dynamics in Himachal Pradesh and Haryana. He has held prestigious fellowships, notably at the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla (2013–2015), where he developed his monograph Spatializing Popular Sufi Shrines in Punjab: Dreams, Memories, Territoriality (Routledge, 2019). His edited and co-edited volumes include Modernity and Changing Social Fabric of Punjab and Haryana, and his research has been widely published in peer-reviewed journals such as The Indian Economic & Social History Review and Economic and Political Weekly.

He is actively engaged in interdisciplinary and collaborative scholarship, contributing to forthcoming publications such as Brill’s Encyclopedia of Sikhism and joint projects like Keywords for Punjab. Dr. Snehi also mentors doctoral candidates, oversees research initiatives such as the Farmers Movement Archives, and serves as Managing Editor for Reading the Archive, a graduate journal in humanities and social sciences.

Beyond the academy, Dr. Snehi contributes regularly to The Tribune and other platforms, writing on heritage, memory, and cultural history. His commitment to public scholarship is reflected in his podcasts, public lectures, and consultancy work for initiatives like the Abohar City Museum. Fluent in English, Hindi, Punjabi, and Bagri, he integrates rigorous historical inquiry with community-oriented cultural preservation.
