Bio-Sketch of Professor Kalyan Kumar Singh, PhD, FIE
Dr. K. K. Singh is working as a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad. He joined IIT (ISM) Dhanbad in August 2009.
He is among the top 2% of Scientists globally according to a recent survey by Stanford University and published by Elsevier (Elsevier’s Database, 2022, 2023, 2024 & 2025).
He was the Dean of Administration (Acting) and Associate Dean (Monitoring and Review) at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad. Dr. Singh was selected for “State Coordinator” for the state of Jharkhand by MHRD New Delhi for a state-specific perspective plan for technical education in India. He is the Founder Chairman of the Indian Society for Advancement of Materials and Process Engineering (ISAMPE) Dhanbad chapter. He was the Honorary Secretary (2016-18) of “The Institution of Engineers (India)” Dhanbad Local Centre. He completed his Ph.D. (Mechanical Engineering) from Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam Technical University, Lucknow in the year 2008 under the guidance of Prof. Prashant Kumar from IIT-Kanpur & Dr. R. K. Singh “Scientist “G” from DMSRDE (DRDO), Kanpur and his research place was IIT-Kanpur.
He has worked as a faculty member at NIT-Jalandhar, Hindustan College of Science & Technology, Mathura, and a Research Associate at the Department of Metallurgy, IISc. Bangalore and visiting research associate at IIT Kanpur in the summers of 2004-07. He also worked as a visiting faculty of the Department of Management Studies at HIMCS Mathura.
He published 3 books and more than 200 research papers in international journals only. The total value of the R&D projects and STP courses under him is around 250 lakhs. He has a life membership of ISTE (Indian Society for Technical Education) & ISAMPE (Indian Society for Advancement of Materials and Process Engineering) and Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India). He also has a membership in the International Society of Impact Engineering (MISIE).
He has guided 19 Ph.D. students as a sole guide or main guide and presently he is guiding 05 Ph.D students. His PhD students are now faculty members at IIT Madras, NIT Allahabad, HBTI Kanpur, BIT Sindri, COEP Pune, CME Pune, University of Taiwan, University of West Indies, and Research Engineer at Austria.
He is the Associate Editor of “Sadhana” journal (Q2) published from Springer, Indian Academy of Sciences. He is also the Associate Editor of Journal of Reinforced Plastics and Composites (JRPC) (Q2) published from Sage Publication, UK. He is also a reviewer and member of the editorial board of national & international journals.
He was the Ph.D. thesis examiner for the students from the IIT Kanpur, IIT Delhi, BITS Pilani, IIT Guwahati, BIT Mesra, Ranchi & many state/central level technological universities including VTU Karnataka.
Apart from all of these through his exemplary academic knowledge, he has taken an interest in teaching students at UG and PG levels in different courses e.g., Engineering Graphics, Engineering Mechanics, Strength of Materials, Machine Drawing, Theory of Machines, Manufacturing Science, UN-Conventional Manufacturing, Operation Research, Production & Operation Management, Composite Materials, Material Science & Engineering & Theory of Metal Forming. Some of his popular course’s students have taken a keen interest and the number of students in his class is around 200. He has visited Stony Brook University, New York, USA 2014 and University of Delaware, USA 2025, and Material Testing Centre, Ulm, Germany 2016. He has been invited for his talk at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT-Roorkee, Government Engineering College, Bagalkot, Karnataka, ADRDE, (DRDO) Agra, NIT Jalandhar, MSRIT Bangalore, BIT Sindri, NIT Goa & NIT Agartala. He has been closely associated with the field of Composite Material for the last twenty-two years. He received the national merit scholarship in school days in continuous four years, a cash prize for his SCI paper in 2007 in HCST Mathura, N.K Iyengar award in 2014 for his research paper from Institutions of Engineers, India, Canara Bank Research Paper Publication award for Department of Mechanical Engineering in continuous two years 2016 and 2017 at IIT-(ISM) Dhanbad and Best Research Paper Award in International Conference at Sikkim Manipal University 2017. He also received IMTR award for best paper publication for the Department of Mechanical Engineering from IIT (ISM) Dhanbad 2022. His area of research is Advanced Nano Composites, Advanced Manufacturing, and Fracture Mechanics & Micro-Mechanics.
