About
Dr. Abel is a Senior Project Scientist at Indian Institute of Technology Madras – Institutional Ethics Committee office, since August 2021. At IEC office, he consults on ethics compliances and managing teams to drive impactful research, takes care of the review process, advises the Principal Investigators / Researchers on the ethical and regulatory requirements put forth by Indian Council of Medical Research, Department of Health Research and facilitates the process of obtaining approvals for research studies involving human volunteers.
Prior to joining the ethics office, he underwent research training in the Vascular Biology Lab at IIT Madras, where he conducted extensive studies on circulating vascular progenitor cells pre- and post-PhD. During his post-doctoral research, he developed an innovative, growth-factor free strategy for therapeutic neovascularization, for which he was awarded the prestigious Gandhian Young Technological Innovation Award (GYTI) by the Hon'ble Vice-President of India (2019). His area of expertise includes, characterizing circulating progenitor cells, peripheral blood mononuclear cells and its functional potential with respect to blood-vascular as well as lymph-vascular angiogenesis.
To his credit, he secured gold medal in Bachelor of Pharmacy (2002) from Tamilnadu Dr. MGR Medical University and Masters in Science (Mol.Bio, 2005) from University of Madras. He obtained his PhD from Madurai Kamaraj University (2018). During his doctoral dissertation, he investigated the therapeutic potential of peripheral blood mononuclear cells in individuals with filarial-induced secondary lymphedema. He also investigated the lymphangiogenic inhibitory effects of whole adult filarial worm homogenates and their fractions using primary cell culture, imaging, and analytical techniques while serving as a visiting scholar at the College of Medicine, Rockford, University of Illinois, Chicago. In addition to these studies, he screened various natural plant-based compounds with lymphangiogenic potential for the development of lymphedema therapeutics.
