About
Arul Muthiah is currently working as Scientist-F & heading the Ocean Observation Systems Group, National Institute of Ocean Technology Chennai and has 23+ Years of experience in Design, Development, Installation and Maintenance of offshore autonomous data acquisition/Collection platforms especially in instrumentation and communication part of the system.
He is actively involved the planning and coordination and implementation of ocean observation systems activities of NIOT. He is successful in developing many indigenous products for ocean observation application such as indigenous development of data buoy data acquisition system for a state of the art moored buoy system transmitting more than 200 parameters in real time.The unit is working at various locations successfully and providing critical warning data in realtime. His success includes the establishment of first Indian under water ocean observatory near North Pole in Arctic.He received National Geo Science award for this work from Honourable President of India in 2016.He was also awarded with Meritorious scientist award from Ministry of Earth Sciences during 2008 from Honourable Delhi Chief Minister Sheela Dixit during the foundation day celebration of Earth Sciences Ministry at New Delhi.He has also authored and co-authored more than 40 publications in peer reviewed National and International Journals.He has five patents granted to his credit and four more patents has been applied for his inventions till date.
He received his Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical Engineering) from Madurai Kamaraj University in 1999 and Master of Engineering (VLSI Systems) from National Institute of Technology(NIT),Trichirapalli in 2001. He has rich field experience on board Various Indian and Foreign Research Ships for Ocean technology related works.
He is an active member in IEEE(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and served as treasurer in IEEE OES(Ocean Engineering Soceity) , India Chapter , a member of Marine technology Society(MTS) Indian section and life time member of Ocean Society of India(OSI).He is also actively involved in national capacity building exercise on student autonomous vehicle competition (SAVe).
He is an editorial committee member of Ocean Digest newsletter released by Ocean Soceity of India and also serves as a reviewer for IEEE International Journal of Oceanic Engineering.

2. Received “National Geo Science award” for the contribution in Installation of first Indian Arctic moored observatory (IndARC) near North Pole ,from Ministry of Mines ,Government of India. The award was conferred by Honorable president of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee.
