About
Prof. R. Shivashankar obtained his doctoral degree from the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) at Bangkok, Thailand, in the year 1991. He obtained his BE (Civil) degree from Bangalore University (India) in the year 1978, and M.Tech degree in Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, at Chennai in the year 1980. He worked as a Sr. Lecturer in Bangalore University colleges between 1980-87. He was a Research Associate at the Institute of Lowland Technology, Saga University, Japan during 1992-95. He joined the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) in the year 1995 and was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at NITK during 1995-2002. He was promoted as a full Professor in the year 2002 and retired from active service of NITK in the year 2021. He has been a visiting faculty at NITK since 2021. He served as the Head of Department of Civil Engineering at NITK during 2003-06, Chairman of Centre for continuing Education during 2002-08, Dean of Research and Consultancy during 2007-10 and Head of Training and Placement Department during 2011-14. He has guided 17 PhD dissertations and over 75 MTech theses in various topics of geotechnical engineering at NITK. He has published over 250 technical papers in various national and international journals and conferences and as book chapters. Areas of interest are geotechnical engineering (soil behavior, pile foundations, ground improvement, slope engineering, geosynthetics engineering). He is a life member of the Indian Geotechnical Society
