About

Dr Gaurav Goel is an Assistant Professor at Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology in India. Gaurav completed his Bachelor’s, Masters and Ph D studies from renowned institutes of India and Canada. His previous position at LSBU was supported by the Indo-UK Industry-Academic Partnership Grant funded from the Royal Academy of Engineering. His work deals primarily with conducting interdisciplinary and translational research. He worked at The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in India on Indo-Dutch flagship project “LOTUSHR” with an aim to develop a holistic water management approach for the recovery of water, energy and nutrients from urban wastewater in a cost-effective manner.
He was National representative of the UK and led a major research activity in the H2020 supported project on “European network of FURan based chemicals and materials FOR a Sustainable development” funded by the EU wide “Cooperation for Science and Technology” (COST) programme, the aim of which is to bolster networking opportunities among EU based researchers. He is also an Associate Member of the EPSRC Peer review college.
Before his move to the UK, Gaurav completed his PhD Degree in the area of Solid Waste management from one of the Premier Technical Institutes, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati. He completed his Master’s Degree from the National Institute of Technology Kurukshetra (2003, India) and qualified for a National Level competitive exam called “Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering” (GATE) to secure the prestigious National Stipend from the Government of India during his Post Graduation.
After completing his Master of Technology (M.Tech), Gaurav Goel has worked at universities in India and Bhutan which includes NIT Hamirpur, NERIST and CST Bhutan. The focus of his Master’s research was Artificial Groundwater Recharge using Rainwater, which raised one key question for Gaurav: ‘What is the fate of clean rainwater once it has reached the subsurface?’ Because subsurface contamination is a very common problem in industrialized countries, clean rainwater used to recharge aquifers can become polluted and thus may not be available for its intended use. Following this realization, he decided to pursue research in the area of Groundwater Contamination and Remediation. He relocated to Canada where he worked to find cost-effective and efficient means of exploration and remediation of contaminated sites. His Ph D project on "Recycling of organic materials for the preparation of fired bricks" received excellent reviews from examiners both abroad and in India. During his PhD research, he worked on using fundamental bottom-up approaches to elucidate structure-property relations of various organic waste materials to discover effective routes in translating these wastes to value-added engineering products. To facilitate this development, he used robust Artificial Intelligence algorithms relying on bootstrapping Random Forest Regression and ANOVA methods and these results were published in top tier journals like the Journal of Cleaner Production.
