R. Vijayakumar is a graduate of Naval Architect from the Cochin University of Science and Technology, Cochin. He completed a PG Diploma in Naval Construction from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, and an M Tech. in Ocean Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, and Ph.D. from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi.
He joined IITM as faculty in 2016, He is presently Professor in the Department of Ocean Engineering of Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. He has published 110 research papers. He has so far guided 10 Ph.D,7 MS projects and 32 M.Tech. projects. He is a consultant to a number of industrial organizations, and has so far completed more than 25 consultancies and sponsored projects
He is also veteran and served in Indian Navy for 21 years and retired as Commander. On completion of his graduate training, he joined the Corps of Naval Constructors of the Indian Navy. He had worked in various capacities in Indian Navy as Naval Architect Designer in Directorate of Naval Design and in Naval Dockyard Visakhapatnam and Mumbai.
His fields of interest include Ship Hydrodynamics, Ship Dynamics and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and green ship initiatives.
