About
Suchismita Nayak is an architect, urban planner and transportation planner with a career focus on research and teaching. She is serving as an Assistant Professor at School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) Bhopal since May 2025. She served as post-doctoral fellow at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay and faculty (temporary) at Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur.
In June 2024, she successfully defended her doctoral thesis, titled "A Daily Activity-Travel Simulator for India Incorporating Multiday and Spatio-Temporal Interdependencies," under the guidance of Prof. Debapratim Pandit to the Department of Architecture and Regional Planning at the IIT, Kharagpur. She visited Arizona State University under the IIT Kharagpur USA Foundation (IITKGPF) international internship award scheme (2022) for a short-term stint.
She has been a Teaching Assistant in several architectural design and urban planning courses. She also assisted in the course “Urban landuse and transportation planning” as a part of the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) initiative by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India to promote quality education within and outside India.
Her area of interest includes the application of quantitative methods, statistical, econometric, machine learning and natural language processing techniques to build models and simulation frameworks to understand and predict the activity-travel behaviour and associated spatio-temporal choice decisions of urban commuters. She is further interested to evaluate the impact of multimodal and sustainable transport policies including emerging technologies and online activities with an emphasis on activity-based and agent-based demand modelling and land-use and travel demand forecasting.
She also has hands-on experience with various transportation modelling software like CUBE, VISUM, VISSIM, and possesses data visualization, data mining, and data analysis skills using Python, SPSS and Minitab. Suchismita is passionate about exploring new research areas in the domain of transportation planning and has a keen eye for details.
