I joined the faculty of the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine in March 2025 as a Professor of Anatomy & Neurobiology and also hold a faculty appointment in the Department of Cardiology at Boston Children’s Hospital. Prior to this transition, I spent 19 years at Children’s National Hospital (CNH) in Washington, DC. Since 2010, I served as a Principal Investigator at the Center for Neuroscience Research and Director of the Cardiac Surgery Research Laboratory, while holding the Foglia-Hills Chair for Pediatric Cardiac Research. My clinical training in Surgery, Cardiovascular Surgery, and Pediatric Cardiac Surgery was completed at the Heart Institute of Japan, Tokyo Women’s Medical University, where I earned board certifications from both the Japanese Board of Surgery and the Japanese Board of Cardiovascular Surgery. I further advanced my research expertise through a fellowship at the Center for Neuroscience Research at CNH.
My research investigates the impact of congenital heart disease (CHD) and subsequent cardiac surgery on the developing brain. As Principal Investigator (PI) on multiple NIH- and DoD-funded grants, I have employed advanced neuroscience techniques to explore brain development in clinically relevant animal models, culminating in numerous publications. I pioneered studies elucidating the relationship between the subventricular zone and cortical growth in CHD, earning recognition from both cardiovascular and neuroscience communities, as evidenced by an invited review article. My ultimate goal as a clinician-scientist is to optimize treatment strategies and develop novel therapeutic approaches that mitigate developmental impairments in children with CHD. The translational nature of my research program has led to significant milestones, including the development of the NIH-funded Phase 1 clinical trial (MeDCaP trial, R33HL146394) at CNH. This trial confirmed the safety and feasibility of a cell-based therapeutic approach (NCT04236479), for which I serve as co-PI.
